Where might I find a glossery either in-world or out-world. I am baffled by terms like HUD snd AO. I have the official guide and it doesn't help. I also been to various help sites in-world and have not found defintions for many things.

HUD = Heads Up Display. Something that 'attaches' to the screen in the game. It doesn't show up for anyone other than you.

AO = Animation Overrider, these things help keep you from doing the Linden Shuffle in the world. Some of these come in a HUD display, so you can click buttons rather than typing commands.

I have found the wikipedia often has definitions for terms used in sl. I don't like to look like a noob and ask, so I look things up in private and then I can be cool and in the know.

Putting " "second life" knowledgebase glossary" into Google produces as it's first result the following url: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/index.php?action=glossary .

Going to the Second Life Wiki at wiki.secondlife.com and putting "Glossary" into the search box and pressing go produces the following page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Glossary .

I just discoved something I should already have known about. It's not a glossary but it looks like it might be a useful site: http://sliki.info/wiki/Main_Page .

There's a useful knowlegebase at sluniverse: http://www.sluniverse.com/kb . Commendations to Cristiano Midnight for his years of valuable service to the SL user community.

There's a tiny glossary in the F1 help, viewable on the web http://secondlife.com/app/help/commonterms.php .

The U.S. Department of Commerce | National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration | NOAA Research | Earth System Research Laboratory's Virtual Education Demonstration has a Second Life glossary at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/outreach/sl/mod/glossary/view.php?id=8 . Anyone should have been able to figure out that SL glossary location without even thinking about it, don't you think?

In my defense...

...I searched for "glossery" as well as specific terms in this forum, the knowledge base and other places but came up with nothing. It never would have occured to me to search with google because I had no idea that SL had pervaded the RL to the extent that it has.

I appreciate the links but not your snotty, superior tone...

Searches are more likely to succeed when the term one is looking for is spelled correctly.
It's "glossary", not "glossery". Google serves as a sort of spell-check for searching; it will often suggest an alternative spelling for a misspelled term.

If one uses the search function at secondlife.com and enters "glossery", the result includes the phrase "Didn't find what you wanted? Try choosing "secondlife.com via google" from the drop-down menu and see if google can help!". Perform this search causes Google to produce it's "Did you mean: glossary " response link. Clicking that link produces the glossary url in the knowledgebase.

There's an inworld group called SLChat that is not a support group but which would be a worthwhile place to ask questions in. The NCI group should also be able to answers such questions, and dropping by the Shelter and asking would also be a reasonable thing to do.
