So, I've heard about a program that allows you to chat through Second Life, though it doesn't actually put you in world. Anyone know what it's called and where to download it?

hmmmm

Metabolt
Ajaxlife
SLim
Sparkle

er.... there are others I think - I've never used any of them, but someone knowledgeable will probably be along in a minute. I don't know if they are all still out there.

Pretty sure it was SLIM, but not sure where you can download it or exactly how it worked.

LL's official chat client is called "SLIM", see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:About_the_SLim_Client

A lot of people don't like it, it is a little heavy since it's kinda optimized for voice. In the 3rd party realm there are quite a few. The first one there was called SLEEK (now MetaBolt). About 3/4 of the way down this page there's a list of text viewers with descriptions of their pros/cons and links to each:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers#Third-party_Viewers

That list is not exhaustive, but should be enough to start with!
