For all intents and purposes, I'm leaving SL...at least as a dynamic participant.
LL has a great concept...but their execution has been less than acceptable, lately. The lack of a cogent plan to deal with rapid expansion and scaling issues, a haphazard approach to customer service...and an even worse record with communications, lead me to believe that things will only improve VERY slowly...if at all.
So...best of luck...and thanks for allowing me to play for a bit. I hope things turn out well for everyone...and...hopefully...some Linden might, just *might* read this and take some time to ponder the voices on the forums, and on the blog.
But then...monkeys could fly out of my butt, too.

You know, it's sad when someone leaves in exasparation and people make light of it. Believe it or not, it's an issue that needs be addressed. Most people just leave, don't say a word (maybe to their friends)............they just go. And here we have someone who wanted to tell everyone goodbye and thanks for the good times........he gets off the cuff remarks showing no understanding at all. I understand where the OP is coming from...been close to that point myself a few times. I would never post it though, because I know how some are here..........an attitude about this being "cutting edge" and if you can't take the heat, "don't let the door slap you on the ass on your way out". For this "world" to continue we can't afford to loose good customers (residents) like the OP appears to be. Linden Lab has issues...............big ones that everyone knows exists. They are not addressing those issues.........not even the major ones. It's not a joke when someone announces they are leaving due to unresolved problems that have been hanging around to many months (even years). It's not something to make little cutesy jokes about. You need to really think about that "cutting edge" part. To be truly cutting edge it must be somewhat usable to the majority of the people using it........Second Life is very close to "cutting edge" of failing in that capatcity. I dont' see it as cutting edge..........I see it as a good idea that needs someone to come along and make it work (make it truly "cutting edge" . I'm not sure LL is that someone.

From: Peggy Paperdoll You know, it's sad when someone leaves in exasparation and people make light of it. The replies were references to his header which was a line from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm sure he doesn't mind. Arthur: You know, it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young. Ford: Why, what did she tell you? Arthur: I don't know, I didn't listen.

I got the header part...........and he may not mind at all. I don't know. But I'm still saddened by the making light of a big problem..............a problem for us all.

see, I just don't buy that "they're not addressing the issues." Linden Lab is in business to make money. They would be stupid beyond belief to have major issues and not be doing all they can to solve them. And in fact they *have* solved quite a lot. When I first started in SL last fall, the grid would choke when 18,000 or so people were on. Now it routinely handles 40,000-plus concurrency. Back then, sim crossings were always dangerous. Now I have issues crossing sims maybe one time in 10, and it almost always self-corrects quickly. No, it's not perfect and yes they have had serious issues lately. There have been several times in my few months when they have had serious issues. Sometimes they drag on for day, but they always smooth out. Look, complex software almost never works right all the time. Ever see Microsoft release an operating system that wasn't immediately followed with flurry of patches and upgrades? Nothing is ever perfect. Given the complexity of something like Second Life, that not only has to simulate the unpredictable interaction of people and objects on a vast scale but also has to display it as well as possible on a huge range of different user machines that LL has no control over, it's a miracle it works at all If the OP feels the system is not stable or strong enough to suit his needs, then he is right to leave ... no one is forced to be here. But apart from LL's rather lousy customer service, I don't see that SL is all that bad. For me, it works pretty well most of the time. Considering that no potential competitors have yet launched anything even half as good, I think that is not bad.

As a matter of fact, yes. Windows 3.1.........Windows 95. And even Windows 98 SE. And with XP SP2, XP works pretty good. Millinium Edition was junk...........and I think you are referring to that. It's gone now........so Microsoft got the message. How long has SL been in existance? Four years? How many stable releases have they had durring that time? I've been here since February, 2006 and I've seen one or two releases that worked for the majority of the people trying to use it.....but they were short lived because the next release broke the old one.........big time. No..............software does not always work as planned. But when it doesn't work it gets fixed before any additional add ons are put out. Well that's for software developers who care anyway. Microsoft, for all their faults, care.............LL appears they don't.

From: Peggy Paperdoll stuff right k, im sorry i played along with the op's own jokes may god send me right to hell for that one hm im still here so... anyway im shure they are a grown adult, capable of making their own decisions, anyone after 10 months inworld can grasp onto linden labs vibe and decide if they are having enugh fun to outweigh the current slew of problems (some that span for years) as SL ages, the problems seem to get bigger, or they linger longer im not shure which but i know its driven me off for the last 2 or so months, burned my land, downgraded, and cashed out and when i do log in it seems to be more of the same, cant upload, slow rez, slow delete, ruth, lag, 5 min teleports , ect ect ect with a crappy little webpage to take care of all your needs ... i know how the op feels

This is the Resident Answers forum. This thread fails to meet the criteria for continuation. This is not an Announcement Forum. I'm sorry to hear about you leaving SL.
