As a 30+ day newbie I am coming to terms with not being able to pick money from the various money trees around SL. I am grateful to all the donators and owners for the privilege that I have had and take this opportunity to thank them.

However residents will appreciate they exist to ease the entry for newbies and generate traffic for residents. What I have observed has me puzzled and then with a suspicious mind frankly worried.

I have observed a money tree receive a new L$ bill and watched it be removed without there being anyone about to pick it. At first I didn't think I was watching correctly so set up a trap to check the event happened. It did.

I have also observed money trees where the 'Money in the tree' shows positive but I cannot find it. Now I know you will say you haven't searched closely enough and being a newbie I could accept that. This is what gives me concern with the advent of 'Copybots' have I uncovered a scam where the money trees are systematically being stripped of 1L$ each time they receive them.

Say 70 trees each getting on average 5L$ per hour and losing 1L$ each time that makes
70 x 24 x 1 per day. Its a little like the scam of stealing the left over when you round something and keep the half cents. As an ex-banker I know about these sorts of tricks.

Have I uncovered a scam or not?

What you've most likely encountered is user error, decay and bugs.

As for the money disappearing, it 'rots' if no one picks it within a certain time, the money goes back into the scripted 'pool' and awaits regen.

With the positive balance, an owner might have accidentally messed with the tree, I've done it myself, where you've lost a prim related to the balane. Therefore the prim is gone but the script in the tree still shows it out there. That's only if it says there is money in the tree.

Another thing is if you are seeing balance, that's what extra to pay out.

Maybe the owners have turned off "building" on the land, to be protected from the copybot? I witnessed one instance where the owner had turned off "building" and the money tree couldn't rez the money and send an error message to the owner. Maybe you've seen that happen, the tree tries to rez, the bill appears and then gets deleted because of the land options.

I always thought that the owner (and his own objects) can always rez things and build on their own land or group land, even with "building" turned off. I guess I was wrong.

I appreciate all that has been said but the decay of money does not explain the immediate disappearance of money after it arrives.

is more likely.

After all who is going to believe a newbie, that money disappears.

Not

Try using debug to turn off the tree and then look. Many of the "hidden" dollars will turn up then.

Also, be sure to rotate your camera to look -INSIDE- the planter. You may very well find money in there. Back when i first started, I once found $24 sitting inside the planter. Not visible unless you turned off the trees and rotated your camera.

OK Everyone this original poster is an alt of some very strange person (initials UM) that has a mental disorder. I am not kidding. There is nothing wrong with the money tree. Ask any and every money tree owner. If you don't like the money tree, don't own one or don't pick from one as a new user. But for god's sake don't listen to this trolled alt.

Whether it's an alt or not, I was trying to help and either way... very self serving to say that after given responses, it's not what someone wants to hear.

P.S. Put the / in front of the word quote.

Nothing significant to add - just jotting down "abnomalies" - goes in my collection of brilliant new words... abnormal anomalies= abnomalies

Good luck with the problem though...

I'm not sure if you were meaning me Sapphire or not but I wish to thank you publicly for providing many money trees and supporting newbies. I, Gregory McLeod, am not an alt of anyone.

I accept that the money may be hidden inside the base and other places and difficult to find.

I just thought that I might have discovered another use for SecondLifeLib facilities which would not normally be reported because of the naivety of the newbie.

I am prepared to accept that it is not the intention of money tree owners to do so.

but is it possible?
