There's a faq on joining that mentions using a cellphone to verify identity for joining at https://secondlife.com/join/faq.php
How Does Mobile Phone Registration Work? Second Life will send a unique code to your SMS enabled mobile phone. You will use that code to finish registration by entering it into the registration screen when prompted to do so. Make sure you have your mobile phone near by when using this type of registration! What is SMS? SMS (Short Messaging Service) is also known as text Messaging. SMS allows individuals to send short text messages to or from mobile phones. Second Life uses SMS as an option for registration instead of using a credit card. Why do you need my Mobile Phone number? Second Life will send a short code to your mobile device. The phone number is required to get the registration code to your device. Does my phone number get used for anything else? No, it will only be used for registration to provide the unique code. How many times can I register with a mobile phone? Each mobile phone number will be allowed to register for one Second Life account. Additional accounts are available for $9.95 each using a credit card. How do I know if my mobile phone is SMS compatible? You will need to check with your mobile phone operator to determine if your mobile phone can receive SMS messages. Why is my Mobile Phone Provider not listed? First, make sure you've entered your correct address and country information in the left column. A list of available service providers will then appear in the dropdown field. Unfortunately, this registration option will not be available for all countries or all mobile service providers. We are currently working to add more providers, so please check back often to see if your provider is available. Is there any cost for mobile phone registration? Most mobile operators charge a small fee for SMS messages. Please contact your mobile phone operator for more details on charges for receiving SMS messages. Second Life will not charge any additional fees to your mobile device. There's a knowledge base article at http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=004 that mentions using cellphones to register with: What if I don't have a credit card, SMS, or Paypal?Question: What do I do if I don't have a credit card, an SMS-enabled cellular phone, or Paypal? Answer: Second Life requires proof of identity during registration. As of this registration, the current forms of ID accepted are: a major credit card (or debit card with a VISA or MasterCard logo), a cellular phone with SMS (text-messaging), or a verified Paypal account (one that has been confirmed with a bank account, or another non-credit-card funding source). If this is your first account with Second Life, you may select the Basic membership at no cost. The Basic account gives you full access to Second Life with no membership fees. (You may still be charged for currency purchases, land use fees, any membership plan you select later on, etc.) If, for some reason, we believe you have already had an account for Second Life before, we'll warn you that we consider this an "alternate account". If you continue registration, you'll begin a seven-day trial. If you keep your Second Life account and do not cancel, you'll be charged a one-time fee for your Basic account. (A Premium account will charge the membership fee you selected during registration.) If you cancel during the trial period, or never log in, your credit card or Paypal will not be charged. Your payment method is used to process any future billing (buying land at auctions, monthly land use fees, etc.). Your card/account is also used as a form of age verification. (Second Life is an online world designed for residents 18 and over. Teen Second Life is an online world for residents 13 to 17.) If you don't have a credit card, you may use SMS registration instead. SMS registration is available for the cellular providers listed on the registration page. We'll send a short code to your phone as an SMS message; you then enter it back onto the registration form to enable your account. If your phone doesn't support SMS messaging, or you don't receive the message for some other reason, or your provider is not listed, you'll need to register with a credit card or Paypal instead. Unfortunately, without a credit card, an SMS-enabled phone, or a verified Paypal account, it's not possible to register or pay for Second Life. I don't see anything there about paying with a cellphone account, just registering. _____________________

I suspected those links were out of date.
I asked in the Linden Answers forum if comments posted in the Knowledge Base were being read and responded to. No answer to that post when I checked earlier today. _____________________
