1. How does one define griefing? 2. What are the ways griefing can manifest itself? 3. What are some of the best protections against it? Hmm.. 1. Any attempt to annoy or disrupt another or others for the sake of eliciting a negative response. 2. Infinite. 3. Don't care. Know the tools that let you ignore the monkey's attempts to get your attention. _____________________

1. How does one define griefing? Here's how wikipedia defines it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griefer 2. What are the ways griefing can manifest itself? Too many to count. Use your imagination, and I'm sure you can think of lots of ways to annoy someone else. No need to give anyone any ideas by mentioning them here. 3. What are some of the best protections against it? Live in a cave, all by yourself, never go outside, and never go online. Anything short of that, and if someone wants to find a way to annoy you, they will. Oh, and if you saw South Park this week, they had an awesome episode about uber-griefer in World of Warcraft. It was funny as hell. _____________________

1) Depends on who you ask before the debates start, heh. For me, it is when someone does something that infringes on the fun and enjoyment of others. Or to put it bluntly; being rude is griefing.
2) Within SL: Using ||Push scripts to push avatars around without thier concent. Repeatedly playing annoying sounds even when asked to stop. Harrasing comments, usually of a sexual, or racist nature. Using lag-inducing scripts or particles to adversely affect system performance. There are many more, but each depends on the person as to wether they are "griefed" by the process or not. 3) Watch the top bar of your UI. As long as you see the NoPush icon, you are already protected from the most common, and easiest, form of griefing. After that, there are a number of "movelock" attachments out there to prevent, or reduce, the ||Push effect. In any case, sitting on any object will prevent 99% of any ||Push weapon. Muting a person also mutes thier sounds, so this gets rid of annoying music/etc from a specific griefer. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+= will turn of Particles if these are being used to lag an area. Poofers using picture textures are also concidered particles for this purpose. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D will turn on your Debug menu options, where you can pull down a list of Client abilities. Unchecking Rendering>Types>Particles has the same affect as Ctrl+Alt+Shift+=. In all cases AR (Abuse Report) the offending person(s) and encourage your friends in the area to also file ARs. The more ARs filed, the better. LL keeps records on who has how many ARs for what. NEVER EVER "fight back"!!!!! Do NOT use a weapon, or foul language, or racist, or such remarks. One of the biggest tools for a "professional griefer" is to incite the law abiding Resident into breaking the rules to fight back, and then ARing that person to get them in trouble. After the AR, if the person is still causing a disruption, IM Live Help and request Linden intervention. This may not be a quick response depending on how busy they are. The last ways to deal with griefing are to either TP to another location (unless they are on your Friends List they won't know where you went) or log and come back later. The majority of griefers get bored bery quickly if they do not have anyone to harrass and move on if no one is there. Combining a few points above, if you ignore a griefer, they tend to get bored and leave. If you "fight back" or even jsut show a reaction, they will continue thier behaviour. From everything I have seen, they only crave attention. ~Jessy _____________________
When your friend does somethign stupid:
Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do. |

3. What are some of the best protections against it? 1. The "mute" feature. 2. Security scripts that obey the TOS and the general "nice" rules. or Banlink for larger clubs. 3. My weppon scanner. Note: It is flakey, but effective. 4. Invisprims to remove objects from view. 5. The little "X" in the upper right corner. |

You've been in SL since 5-24-04.
Your profile About statement reads in part:" Describing oneself is like painting sunrise with charcoal. 'Nimue' means either moon goddess or lady of the lake in Gaelic. Galatea reminds me of the stars, which hypnotize me. Besides SecondLife, I also play a variety of roleplay intensive MUDs. " I suspect you already have a good idea what griefing is. What is your purpose in asking this here? _____________________

most peoples confuse griefing and "something that disturb me"
in all cases, a little of both is needed to ensure we do not fall in a deep state of amorphism. _____________________

That little cross in the right hand corner of the screen is the best option. For most people things can seem better the next day, and for the few who have other thoughts.... well you deprive them of an audience
