Following a tip in the forum I decided to check out that Meta7 opensim-based grid, and take a look at what was on offer. That LightShare is amazing! We have been asking for this for yonks in SL https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2736, but those guys actually did it. If they can have it, why can't we? Seeing what others can do with LL's own software makes me wonder why LL isn't trying to do more to improve Second Life in similar ways. Right now, it seems that all they're doing is shifting fifty pennies around, hoping to find a dollar.

I note that this site wants your real name, address and date of birth, saying that it is required by law to collect this information.
What law would that be?
I don't recall having to do that for all the other OSOG worlds.

I don't recall having to do that for all the other OSOG worlds. Not sure. I know the company that own Meta7 have their registered office in Delaware, so maybe it is a State requirement for it being an 18+ site. I know I had to give all that info for visiting the SL adult continent. Conversely, when Legend City Online went bust a good many people wanted the real name, address and date of birth of the owners who had vanished with all their money. Rock

I never had to give my real life name, address and age to LaLa when I signed up for LCO. Maybe because I never bought any land. I did purchase Legends though through PayPal.

I see that the Meta7 TOS and the SL TOS are almost identical. In both, for Account Registration, they say: From: someone You agree to provide true, accurate, current and complete information about yourself as prompted by the registration form ("Registration Data" and maintain and promptly update the Registration Data to keep it true, accurate, current and complete. I just had a look at SL's account registration page: They require real name, email, country of residence, date of birth, and gender. https://join.secondlife.com/?lang=en-USRock

To clarifify the "real name and such" : It's a requirement by the latest laws written to protect citizen from the bad internet. As 'provider', we could be asked to give an id (after all legal stuff of course). It doesn't means it's our duty to check if the ID given is real or not.
For more, consult any recents laws across the world that want to "protect " : Please select at least one : ( ) children ( ) freedom of speech as long as it's the same as ours ( ) my politician party ( ) our main investors ( ) Anything that can make me re-elect
Well, sadly it's how it works, and as i said, there is no requirement yet to check the data's validities. we stick with the minimal legal stuff, and it's already hard enough !

From: Johan Laurasia Actually, that's what Snowglobe is all about. So.. it's the 50 cents that keeps being shoved around, hoping to find a dollar? Last alt I created, I had to supply all the RL information.

I checked this world out yesterday. It's rather interesting, and does seem to work well. I did crash once, but no worse than in the SL grid. Had a few glitches making a pair of shoes to wear. "Undo" didn't quite work normally, nor did rotating several selected prims of a larger linkset. But on the whole, content creation and interaction with the world seemed to work better than most alternate grids I have seen.
Apparently they will accept inbound currency conversion transfers of L$ from SL, but not the other way, from their currency to L$. Just like Legend City did. They claim this is a limit imposed by the Linden Lab TOS? I couldn't find a way to purchase their currency with a credit card or PayPal. I think that function isn't live yet.
You can create an account with any surname you can type, which is a nice touch. So I am Ceera Murakami on that grid as well. Could cause issues with "Name squatting" and impersonation though. Nothing to prevent a stranger from claiming a well-known name from another grid.

Some answers : Currency: The currency is functional : you can buy some using our website or inworld usig our 'ATM' (see our web for the adress). Tradingback currency to SL is very hazardous due to the "Banking issue". It's a risk we don't want to take as the SL ToS is definititvly not clear regarding that issue and a ticket was never answered either. So, in doubt... Name Squatting: Unfortunatly, we don't have any way to prevent ID thief. OpenId is not implemented in SL yet. Have a good evening Laurent

Have a good evening Laurent Thanks for the replies! I intend to go back there and check it out again, once I have a little extra funds set aside to obtain some currency. Kind of hard to upload textures for a dress and to make other things without any in-world funds. And right now, my priority on funds is to pay my land bill here in SL. But you'll probably see me there again some time soon.

To specify a bit: There is a little trick when buying M$ on the website, hehe. When you load the "Buy M$" page, you only see the field where you can put in the amount of M$ you want to buy, but no other buttons to actually click, like "Buy". They just show up when you actually click into the field with the amount you want to buy, then you can chose a payment method, and after chosing that the "Buy" button appears.

Thanks Daniel. I did that, and the only payment options seemed to be PayPal or a transfer from your SL finds? No VISA, MasterCard or American Express?
Will have to wait a while longer, I guess, as my PayPal funds are all tied up in covering my land costs.

Ah, looks like it, I only transfered from SL so far. But i just translated the templates for the website into German, and there are already credit card options included, so I'm sure it will come up soon.

LCO went under?
LOL!! Everyone was running over to that place! A couple big names set up sims of their stores and everything.
But you know what? That place started with drama and that is always a bad sign for any startup business endeavor.
All that money wasted...
