I'm trying, and failing, to find a way to limit the range of normal (text) chat to my parcel boundaries. Is there any way at all to do this?

In a word, No. It's built into the server software.

this is the stuff fantasies are made of.
it would be great if local chat were more like voice chat, with the possibility to have a private parcel channel. _____________________

Which is why there's a jira entry promoting the creation of llParcelSay. Can someone explain in plain English what the two jiras in the search results for that actually mean? /me is not so good with script speak If they'd mean a checkbox in the land properties, to restrict local chat to the parcel, then all good cause that's what I'd be wanting to do! ![]() I use: Skype, MSN, or: IRQ *waves* Hmmm, not exactly an in world solution for trying to have just the one window running, and be able to chat away without disrupting the neighbours! |

/me points and shouts "VOTE!"
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-1224 New feature: llParcelSay Similar to llRegionSay, it might be nice to have a chat function that goes to every resident/script on a parcel. Since it'd be limited to a single parcel, I think the no-channel-0 restriction that llRegionSay has wouldn't be needed. Can someone explain in plain English what the two jiras in the search results for that actually mean? They're asking for different things. SVC-1224 asks for llParcelSay and SVC-1532 asks for llDefinedSay (or llRangedSay) that works like llSay/llWhisper/llShout but you can tell it how far to go. Hmmm, not exactly an in world solution for trying to have just the one window running, and be able to chat away without disrupting the neighbours! Oh... That'd be yet another feature request. The other two JIRA issues are scripting-only things.. _____________________

Although...
LLParcelSay on channel 0 would allow only those on the parcel to hear. Anyone who wanted to 'say' something would need to chat at a device that relayed what theyed type via LLParcelSay ... so it's not quite the 'normal chat' of the OP. I once sat around in a circle of friends having a chat session that could not be overheard outside the parcel I passed out copies of a placard-on--a-pole. Every thing we typed on channel 1 got displayed on the placard we held. It was a fun chat session. _____________________

/me adds http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4331
new "About Land -> Chat Doesn't Cross Parcel Bounds" option It'd be nice to have a parcel option that would allow owners to say that people chatting on their land can't be heard by neighboring parcels, even if they're within 20m. Or, plan B, maybe an option where owners can say that chat from neighboring parcels don't make it onto their land. _____________________

Wouldn't llParcelSay have the same scripting concerns as llSay?

I'm amazed this hasn't been done before (my search skills are such that I didn't want to lose my jira cherry duplicating somethnig already there)! Thank you, looked at and voted ![]() |
