I crashed earlier & now when I try to log back in it gives me an error mesage when it gets to "Inilializing QuickTime". The APPname:secondlifevoicefirstlook.exe comes up. I see the solutionMAYBE regarding deleting the cache, but VERY scared to do this. Not sure that this is the solution for THIS problem & the way things have been running with all the issues they are having lately hate to take a chance with anything that contains inventory. Never done this before. HELP, can't get in!!!

No inventory is kept in cache

The SL cache is simply temporary storage to hold things on your system so the same thing isn't constantly being downloaded. When it gets full it starts shedding the older stuff to be replaced with the new.

You will lose nothing by clearing the cache but temporary files.

No inventory is stored on your system. It is held on Linden servers.

You mean you go to the second life file on your computer under cache & hit DELETE? Just making sure.

Try first also just rebooting the computer.

Very often when a program crashes, it leaves a mess of stuff broken around that a simple restart of the computer, will fix.

If you need to clear cache, you can go to the login page and before logging in, click preferences and go to Network and clear cache. Thats assuming the login page initially will start.

Myself, I just go to my Second Life cache folder and delete EVERYTHING in it (just DON;'T DELETE THE FOLDER ITSELF! Only the contents! Leave the empty folder with nothing inside)

Edit: there is also a way to start Second Life *without* initializing Quicktime first, let me check if it is on Torley's site, but it involves adding a -noquicktime paramater to your start shortcut -- if I can find the page for the exact correct command, he also explains HOW, in easy words.

Oops, bad memory, it was not Torley but Nicholaz who had the "No Quicktime at launch" tip, see here:

It sounds from the other post that there are several people who cannot log in. So just be patient I guess and try again in a while...

for windows it's C:\Documents and Settings\Your profile Name\Application Data\Second Life\Cache

Go there and delete everything. Thats the best way to clear it IMO.

If you have never been able to login, or if in hundreds of attempts you always immediately crash, it sounds more like a configuration issue with your specific computer.

You might try starting a thread in the tech section listing the specs of your system and giving more details, and maybe we can help. Be sure to list everything you can about your system (operating system, cpu processor, memory and videocard)

It is hard to tell from your post whether you've ever managed to stay inworld at all, or for any length of time.

If the crash occurs with the "initializing Quicktime" message, you might try Nicholaz's suggestion for disabling Quicktime at startup.

Right click on your desktop shortcut, go to PROPERTIES for the shortcut, you should see something like this under TARGET:

C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe -set SystemLanguage en-us

(might be a different path on your system)

Edit that to add -noquicktime, like this:

C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe -noquicktime -set SystemLanguage en-us

If that gets you in, then go to Preferences and disable (for now) the video/audio streaming using quicktime until you can find a better solution.

You might also want to try completely uninstalling quicktime, run a registry cleaner, and then reinstall quicktime.

Thanks Brash for all your help-I have been on SL with no problem for months, but curiously I did add or readd Quicktime to my computer yesterday while also installing Itunes to try to get different music stations on my property. I have just been using url someone gave me.

So I believe it might have something to do with Quicktime so maybe I should delete that & try-could not find the file again for the other in my computer-documents and settings.

Never had this problem before-have only crashed a couple of times in the couple of months. Been real lucky till now-just remembered I was inline when I was downloading Quicktime I believe. Just tried to uninstall Quicktime & could not do it-says fatal error when trying to install-saw that yesterday - maybe because there had been old version of it on my computer-anyway it says uninstall or uninstall everything meaning that there are other files connected in someway to this Quicktime file-maybe that is tied to part of the SL problem-my computer expertise stops there. Afraid to say yes uninstall EVERYTHING to the Quicktime file.

Any further help greatly appreciated-I've got to get in!

ITunes have in the past caused issues with some people's computer configurations. I wish I could recall more details.

If you logged in fine before installing iTunes, and were fine say 72 hours ago (or whenever you installed the new software), another thing to try is System Restore to revert your computer back to the state it was before the problems started. This won't jeopardize emails or most data on your system, but it will mean anything you installed since the date you select, will no longer work till reinstalled (but obviously DON'T reinstall until you test whether it fixes it). It should put you back to the version of Quicktime you were using before.

Let me know if you are not sure how to do a System Restore (probably under Accessories/System Tools, but I am not familiar with the VISTA version)

Pick a date when you know the system worked fine. If it doesn't solve it, you can always revert back to how things are now, again.

Yeesh.. iTunes is evil. ;p I'm glad QT made it as a optional download now. I prefer VLC player for all media types. i don't have a iPod so i don't need anything like that.

This is the first time I have not been able to do system restore, but it would not work to before the crash. I tried deleting Itunes , deleted the newest Quicktime & could not delete the old one. Tried logining in different place as suggested by support & also some suggestion to run waterhead etc from them. Nothing has worked so far. The file cache under documents and setting is no where to be found. The only thing maybe I can do is to uninstall & restall the game. I just hope I do not lose my houses & inventory-hopefully it is on the other servers.
Any help appreciated-I am getting desperate-fixing to have surgery tomorrow & this was going to be my only way to spend my time! PLEASE HELP!

You will only lose your house if you don't keep up the mortgage repayments. (In RL)

But all is safe in SL regardless of what happens outside of it on your own computer.

You can set fire to your computer and buy a new one, come back to SL and nothing would of changed..

Does anyone think that me downloading a copy of Quicktime could be a reason for my crash & not being able to get back in. Does anyone know what the file I see common to both Quicktime & SL is: SecondLife.exec_marker & Quicktime.exec_marker? Is this the problem? Will have to do some work to delete the additional Quicktime since it will not uninstall using ADD/Remove-or does this not have anything to do with why I cannot log back in:

Error: App Name: SecondLifeVoicefirstlook.exe
AppVer: 1.18.1.136 Mod Name: Unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset:000a01cb

Just wanted to see once last time before I give up & have to delete & reinstall SL.

You all are my only hope since support barely answered & said they do not give support to SecondLifeVoiceFirstLook! Can't believe, but I've had other issues with creating accounts that has been TOTALLY messed up no matter how many times I explained to them!

Thanks all!

I do not know what SecondLife.exec_marker & Quicktime.exec_marker are.

I did a google search for "SecondLife.exec_marker", most of the results unfortunately were not in english (many italian). Many mentioned trojans and rookits though this MAY NOT be the issue here, so don't let me alarm you. I don't have a file named SecondLife.exec_marker on my setup, however it might also be created by a antivirus program checking commonly used executables for changes, so may be created by your AVG program. I don't know.

I DO know that there is nothing you can do that will jeopardize your assets in Second Life. None of that data is kept on your computer, it is all on the second life servers. That's why you can log into your account from any computer in the world, and everything is there. So, you can't screw up your house, land or inventory. Its all safe.

I would try going to Control panel: Add & Remove programs and remove anything there related to Quicktime, and especially iTunes. ((<<- edit: sorry! You already tried this.) Check MSCONFIG also and make sure those are not loading at computer startup (I personally have NOTHING loaded at startup except basic Microsoft services). I run a Clean Boot state on every computer in our house all of the time, it is their normal startup. I forget if you mentioned whether you have Vista or WinXP or what, but I =highly= recommend Microsoft's Clean Boot steps listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

At this stage, I would probably also recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Second Life. It's can't hurt at this stage, and will NOT jeopardize your inworld assets in any way.

After uninstalling but **BEFORE** reinstalling anything, I would download and use a registry cleaner, I am not sure what the really good "free" ones are, I use a free app called Advanced WindowsCare that does this but there may be better programs for free others can recommend. You can get Advanced WindowsCare here http://www.majorgeeks.com/Advanced_WindowsCare_d4991.html OR you can wait to see what better programs someone else suggests. I've been too lazy to research much on registry cleaners, and WindowsCare always seems to work ok for me. WindowsCare will also offer to empty all of your excess TEMP folders, which often helps in installing programs that crashed while installing (they get jammed up on the previous TEMP files related to the installation, and you sometimes need to clean out those old files before trying again.)

Reinstall Second Life, and I would then reinstall a version of QuickTime that does not include iTunes.

The fact that it is related to the Voice version for the viewer, MIGHT suggest it is related to codecs. I frankly do not know how codecs & SL work, I do however know that I used to do a lot of volunteer tech support in the Oblivion forums, and certain codecs were a constant problem there, and iTunes was also a big headache. One thing that often worked for Oblivion users, (but may not have anything to do with your issues in Second Life, I dunno), is we often suggested people download and use the free K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. You can get that here: http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm

What it does is replace a lot of problematic codecs, with more acceptable and stable versions that "play nice" with other programs. I was initially very skeptical about this program, however after many many reports of it solving Oblivion issues, I started recommending it and was astonished to find it was solving issues far more often and thoroughly than any other trouble-shooting suggestion we could make.

I eventually became a bit of a zealot in Oblivion for two cures: a Clean Boot of the computer (NO extra programs such as iTunes loading at launch), and using the K-Lite pack. In a majority of the cases, these two small simple things became the "magic bullet" solution for literally hundreds of people. I was really amazed.

Anyway, I hope something here helps, or that others suggest something to solve it.
