Hi,
I have searched the Classified forums, and the Classifieds inworld, and most 'jobs' in SL seem to either related to the sex industry, surveys (whatever that is), and camping.
Are there no 'proper' jobs in SL? How does anyone find them?
Thanks in advance

You could always go to some of the bigger shops you like and ask if they're hiring. Kinda like RL!

It depends on what you are looking for, and what you consider 'proper'. It also depends on what you want from the job, what salary, terms etc, and how many hours and how many days per week you can be on.
My Estate is always looking for Sales Managers (Rentals) for our sims. We provide good commission, and a free (tied) furnished apartment (high standard) in the best sims in SL. Socialising with the tenants is part of the job, so a nice avi, beachwear and evening-wear are a must.
We only take on staff who are on for more than 3 hours per day, and at least 5 days a week, so that usually rules out a lot of people.
Give me an IM when inworld if you are interested.

Most "proper jobs" in SL are self-employment. Learn a skill that someone else will value, and set up your own business selling the service or product that you make. Very few SL merchants have any realistic need for "employees", outside of the sex and entertainment industries. Most SL work is at minimum-wage or lower levels, in terms of time spent versus compensation received. So the profit margin is so small that most merchants don't have anything to spare to pay employees. If you could help make SL clothes, you could just as easily make and sell them yourself, and keep all the profits. Same goes for most forms of building, making textures, scripting... Since one can have multiple appearances for an avatar, most merchants use variations of themselves when they need models for a fashion photo shoot. There is some market for fashion models, but it is sporadic. Some larger builders will sub-contract other builders to work on larger projects, like whole-sim builds. But you need the skill set first, and for that you pretty much need to run your own business for a while. About the only thing I hire "unskilled labor" for is repetitive tasks like distributing trees and plants on a sim or parcel. In general, ANY work you can do in SL will pay less than you could earn using similar skills in a real world part-time job. You should work in SL only if you *enjoy* doing that sort of activity. For example, I rellly enjoy building, making textures, and terraforming. I'd do it even if there was no money in it, just because, for me, it's fun. Don't bother working in SL if you're just trying to make money. Your time and effort would be better spent taking a real part-time or full-time job, and buying L$ when you need them.

Unskilled jobs that seem common that are not in the "Sex Trade" are commonly club host, property managers, and models (To an extent I would assume.), maybe a few others as I am new, but those are the ones I have seen and heard of so far. All unskilled jobs are more about your presence and socializing than actual "Work", less so for property managers.
Skilled jobs seem to all fall under content creation, clothing makers, builders, tarraformers and things of that nature. They need real skills in SL to gain any profit.
So in the end as others said, do what you naturally enjoy and if you profit from it all the better.

Oh yeah do camping stylish way? have someone sweep the floor or play a guitar. Regardless camping is camping, and all establisments that take part in it should be boycotted. For Sparta.

Places like BareRose have legitimate employees that help people with questions and hang out overall. That place is never without an employee there! There are a bunch of different places that aren't "camping" popular but "successful" popular out there.

Many thanks for replies so far.
The real estate job sounds wonderful, I just don't know if I can be on for the amount of time needed.
Dispense with my morals and go into the sex trade? I don't think so.
Self-employment? I didn't come into SL to work full time. I guess it is similar to RL, work is a necessary evil for most people, the means to earn your living, while your interests are very much outside of work. A priveleged few get to do work that they also immensely enjoy.
I want to socialise in SL, not having much of an opportunity in RL, and I understand that I need to earn some money to keep up my appearance, pay rent etc. I will leave self-employment to those who really love what they do.
Any other suggestions out there?
Thanks again

Really as Ceera said, its better to make money in RL and then buy your L$. This world is not set up with jobs for all, generally there are no offices, definitely no factories or restaurants etc.

To repeat...it is easier to make money in real life, and spend it in SL. Even good cybersex workers only make a few dollars per hour. Why bother?
if you want to make a lot of money in SL, you have to find some skill or product that you can sell automatically in large quantities.

Any other suggestions out there? There is no requirement that your Avatar ever earns a single L$ by doing any sort of "work" in SL. They don't need to eat, and can't starve. Free clothes and skins and hair are available. You can log off and log on at any public location, without need of a house or home. So, just go socialize. Forget the job. No one will think less of you for not holding down a fantasy employment slot. When you need L$ for new clothes, or to buy and pay rent on land, or to buy a home for a place to entertain friends, just whip out a credit card or a PayPal account and buy some L$ on Lindex. Problem solved.

Vi Hi Vi! There are "proper" jobs in SL, but they go pretty fast. Many retails shops, such as myself, have a staff including store managers, sales associates, greeters, models...etc. The problem is that there are many people like yourself who are not interested in working in the sex industry or starting their own business, so these positions are getting more difficult to find. From one ad yesterday we received several applications and have nearly filled every open position. Good for us....but not for someone who didn't happen to see it at that time. Keep looking at the classifieds and I hope you do find something which suits you. Best, ~Ari
