OK. I know enough about sound mixing and editing to get good sounds uploaded into SL. Sounds which are quite loud on my local system. I use Sound Forge and Audacity, and I Normalize my sounds to -3dB generally before uploading.

However, no matter what I do (including Amplifying them to the point of clipping), I can't seem to get anything but weak sound coming out of SL unless I have the camera within 1m of the sound-emitting prim. I was working on a train whistle, which normally is quite loud, but I can barely hear it standing 10m away! That's with the volume in llPlaySound set at 1.0.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a "magic trick" to getting sounds to where they are decently audible at ranges greater than a few meters from the emitter? I've heard sounds others are using, and they are quite audible at range, so I must be doing something wrong, I figure.

Help? Thanks in advance!

First, the default sound settings are extremely quiet. I think most folks would enjoy sound better if they had thier distance and roll-off factor sliders more the left. A lot more.

Second, the engine SL uses to spacialise sound has a habit of quieting things down. To get a sound nice and loud you really do have to squeeze it to just a bit of a clip. It helps if you hard-limit the sound to -2db or so first, then normalize it to closer to -3db. Sure, it's a bit flatter, but if you really need the sound noticable its about all that helps.

Otherwise, you may need to trigger the sound several times in the smake space/time - the engine does ok overlaying sounds.

I know next to nothing about uploading, dj-ing etc but I observed that there are two types of sounds in SL.
There are the sound effects which are closest to source and roll off as you move away.
There are the streams that broadcast the music in clubs etc that have a level .. um .. level across the defined area.
Are you mebbe just overlooking something like having roll-off too high?

edited sorry. misread

found out the same problem as you mentioned. my testing did reveal the camera position is the hearing spot, so when i turned back on the sound source the volume was the loudest. for a game of mine i'm thinking of placing a invisible prim about a meter in front of the actual game so the sound will be at the right source.. very crappy designed by linden indeed
