Hi, first post here

I saw another avatar mimic me using my name in public chat. The writing on my screen was in green though, so I could see what it was he was saying as opposed to me.

How is this possible?

It was as if he had changed his name to mine and when he spoke it come out as if it were I speaking?

Can anyone tell me how it is done?

its called Object speak i think and its a neat tool when used in fun. like an emoter or when someone uses a microphone.You can see it mostly used by slingo boards and contest boards etc.

The green text, assuming you are using the default chat text colors, indicates that the text comes from a scripted object.

I can't find one at the moment. They can be real annoying if used improperly.

I use the MystiTool HUD, which includes that feature along with many, many other userful featues. (No financial connection with them, just a satisfied customer.)

Back in the old days people would put out a scripted object that mimiced the name of a nearby avatar and emitted an insult directed at another nearby avatar, so that the green text might say:

"SuezanneC Baskerville says: Johanne Sebastianbach is ugly and stupid and so's his mom!"

New users that didn't know that green text came from scripts would get quite upset.

Other folks would at times to make it appear that their own words were coming from a Linden staffer, causing now end of trouble or amusement, depending on who was playing the trick.

One used to run into a Lee Linden lookalike object that said stuff somewhat like a Liaison would say back then, like "Keep your clothes on", or "You don't need to take the box off your head; I think the box looks good there." One version of this thing was almost useful.

Basically all you have to do is rename any talking object to that of a resident. To stop this we would have to search the whole resident name database whenever you renamed a plywood cube.
