SecondLife crashing on startup?

Does anyone else have this problem?

When I start SecondLife, I don't even progress to the sign-in screen. I immediately get a crash logger.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted the computer, deleted everything manually, and still no joy.

I am having no other problems with my computer. Just SL.

ETA: It's also crashing on my husband's computer.

This happened to me a couple weeks ago, and only with the First Look client. I tried clearing the cache, uninstalling, etc, and the problem never resolved. Oddly enough I tried re-installing the First Look client into a different folder from the default (called it SecondLifeFirstLook2 instead of SecondLifeFirstLook) and it worked, and hasn't given me problems since.

*shrugs*

Have you tried the latest First Look and Regular viewer? Maybe make sure your video card's drivers are up to date. Did u try downloading the installer again? I've gotten corrupted installers from the website before.

If you can't get the login screen before you system crashes it has to be on your end. I would start with a clean install of SL..........meaning uninstall the older client first. Check your firewall to make sure it's not blocking the client from accessing SL for the stats and "permissions" to login. If all is still "no joy" clear your system cache, do a disk clean up, maybe go and do a "file check" (the old "scandisk" in earlier versions of Windows) and a disk defrag.

And something that has cause me some really weird problems with programs that I would never expect to have anything at all to do with it..............check any pop up blockers you may have running. Makes no sense at all that something like that will cause problems but, hey, it's worth a shot. :)

I'm assuming you are using Windows XP?

Actually I was having the crashing on start up thing too last night several times. I tried re install and that didn't work.

I figured it was the area I was in when I crashed the first time. Since I'm a premie member I could adjust my landmarks to go to home at start up, and sure enough that solved my problems. I went back to the area and it crashed me a couple more times before the night was done so it was definitely the area not my computer. At least in my case. :)

The OP doesn't seem to get the point where logging into a different place is an option. Crashing before that point. It has to be on the client or computer and computer hardware end. Nothing to do with the online part of SL.

Wow. Don't have an answer for this, but I'll tell everyone I can about it who might know what to do.

Don't give up!!!

Yup, my install of Windows is permanently corrupted. (Found that out when I tried to load Poser last night - ARGH.)

Thanks, everyone. We're going to try a repair of Windows. Cross your fingers that that works - because the other option is a reformat.
