Download Qavimator and learn how to use it! It's pretty easy if you understand the basics of animation. Just remember to make the first frame a T-pose with every joint at 0,0,0. I would have made progress much sooner if someone hipped me to that piece of info at the beginning!

2 possibilities:
[1] Get a copy of Poser, Avimator or some other animation program and create your animation. Ulrika Zugzwang wrote a wonderful tutorial using Poser 5.0 that is downloadable from her website (when it's up, that is).
[2] Hire an animator in SL to make the animation for you. Expect to pay a high price because unless it is marketable and the creator is allowed rights to resell the item, if they have to create a unique item for only you, there tends to be a high upcharge to cover the time they had to spend doing something for you alone, that they could have spent doing something for themself. You will also face the challenge of finding someone who [A] has the software to do it, has the skill to do it (for example, I have Poser myself, but not the skill to make an any animation which i would be proud to show off), & [C] has the time to do it.
If you choose to hire someone to do your animation, make sure that you see a copy of their work (verify it... check properties that they are the creator of the animation itself and not just the poseball, AO, posing stand or whatever. PT Barnum of the famous circus is noted as saying "There is a sucker born every minute, and two to take him." This seems especially true in SL. There are plenty of unscrupulous people who'll happily show off someone else's work as their own, then take your money and run.
Good luck with your search.
You might want to ask a moderator to move this to the "Products Wanted" thread. You might find a bit more response there.

Sound advice Stephanie,
Even as good as Poser and Avimator are for poses and animations, the "learning curve" would probably take way longer than you would expect...better to hire an animator.
If they charge too high of a price, it would be a rip-off though. A two-legged walk shouldn't take more than a few minutes for an experienced animator.
The only reason that I don't suggest doing it by yourself is because it will probably look overly "smooth" and therefore robotic.
Good luck!

One thing I've found out is that a lot of the anims and gestures commonly in use today are made from motion capturing. I would wager that only a few animators out there actually make the human-looking animations out there do it frame by frame. Otherwise, if you learned to do it yourself, then you could sell them and make money off of the next person that wants a custom anim!
