The Giving of Gifts in SL

I today wished to buy a gift for a friend in game. Then of course I hit upon the obvious snag. Anything worth buying and giving is non-transferrable (for perfectly good reasons, obviously). So I wonder, is there a way around this conundrum?

Is there any way of buying an object that can be transferred once only? If not could such a feature be developed for this purpose? There are so many reasons to want to send a gift in SL, as much as in RL, anniversaries, birthdays even courting (bunch of flowers, might be nice to get once in a while!).

(at the risk of exposing my ignorance on matters technical) Can a non-transferrable object be packaged so that it my be given in some way? Perhaps gift-boxes could be developed for this purpose, turn a non-transferrable item into a one-off transferrable one?

Finally - are there any vendors out there who offer a gift delivery service, so that I can make a purchase that will be sent to the lucky recipient?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

The best thing I've heard of is that many store owners do 'gift cards'.

Ask the owner of the no-trans item if they can't either A) give you one to give out, or B) (this is what I'd do on no trans items) get the creator, pay them for the outfit and have them tag a folder within a folder.

The first folder name being the item, the folder than contains that could be titled 'A special gift for you - purchased by Persephone Wade!'

In the inventory, upon accept it would look like this:

|> A special gift for you - purchased by Persephone Wade!!
.....|> NCD Goobleygoggler Outfit
.............Shirt
.............Skirt
.............Hat
.............Landmark to NCD

There are several methods sellers use to help you give gifts of copy-only items.

I just deliver the gift myself, arranging with the gift-giver.

Others have various gift certificate systems. Some are manual (transferrable textures, usually) others are script based.

You just have to ask the merchant. =^.^=

Many of the retailers will be happy to have you purchase directly from them and they will drop the item on your intended recipient. Just IM them and ask :)

As for vendors Moopf Murray make the giftoph (spelling?) vendor which has a purchase as a gift option built into it. I do not know for certain if anyone else does. But this is good, inexpensive and easy to use vendor.

Hi Persephone,

The easiest way is to contact the creator in-world and ask them to gift the item for you. Every one I've ever talked to has been happy to do that.

If the item is on SLExchange you can also "buy as a gift" and the item will be sent to the recipient while the money is taken from you.

It is possible to package a no-transfer object so that it can be given (the Multi Gadget, for instance, comes like this) but it's a fairly complicated and fraught process. I had planned to do this with some of the items I sell, but after having to add about the fifteenth security check into the gift box I decided to let it be :)

Take your friend to the store.
Show your friend what you want to buy for them.
Give the money to your friend.
Let your friend do the actual purchace.

I`m sorry, Persephone. I thought you wanted an option that worked, not one that was romantic.:o Alas, the romantic option often doesn`t work in Second Life, given the way the permissions system works. An even more romantic solution, that does work, if you have any skills, is to give your sweetie something that you`ve actually made by your very own self. When you do this, you don`t have to worry about those pesky permissions, except for which ones you want your sweetie to have.:)
