During all the publicity for voice, it was clearly stated we would be able to turn voice off on our land.

Well, I went and download the new voice viewer specifically to turn voice off at my home and mall. Guess what? There's no such option anywhere in About Land.

Just duh.

Hello Apple, though a distant memory I thought that the sims rather than plots would be switched in or out of the voice 'grid'

There's an option on the 'Media' tab of the 'about land' window which is IMHO poorly worded but one of the options appears to allow you to disable voice. (It reads something like 'disable spacialized audio'). You need to use the voice viewer to see it though. I.e. you have to download the voice viewer and use it to turn voice off on your land.

Same with the estate controls, you can only turn voice off with the voice viewer.

There's also a bug (or feature?) where if you turn voice off, the voice-enabled icon stays on and continues to say voice is enabled on the land even after you've turned it off. I don't use voice so I don't know if the problem is the icon staying 'on' when voice isn't available, or if the problem is the 'off' button is broken so voice is always enabled and you can't turn it off.

Easy way to tell with the voice viewer. Enable voice in preferences, go to the plot and if you have a glowing ball over your head, then chat is enabled. If it's not, voice isn't enabled, in spite of what the icon says. I noticed with the First Look that the icon shows up if the sim you are in is 'Voice Enable-able," and not reflective of whether voice is actually turned on or off.

Drove me crazy because in FL version, the voice was off by default and I was trying to turn it ON. Had to click something about, local channel or estate channel to finally get it turned on.

If the system is Opt-In shouldnt voice be "Off" on parcels by default?

Now that would make sense, so will probably never happen

Why are you guys disabling voice at the parcel level? So people won't say something there you can't hear? I really don't want to sound mean about this.

Actually, it was defaulted off for the First Look viewers. Ignore the idiotic blue icon that says it's enabled. It's a throwback from the First Look viewer, which only tells you that voice 'can be enabled' on the parcel/land and not whether it actually is or not! If you have the Voice version installed, look for the glowing ball above your avatar's head, instead.

If you don't have the Voice version installed, you won't be able to change anything. In other words, having the Voice version is almost a must for those who have the option enabled and are estate owners/officers or parcel owners with it enabled. *sigh*

I expect high-traffic places will do this to prevent speaker spam fests.

Good point

Or clubs with live DJ's: to stop people talking over the DJ.

OR Live music events: to stop people talking over the live Music.

Or people who just like - want to turn it off. Becuase they paid for the place.

Here are my two reasons why I won;t have voice on my land, and why I won't use voice. And if I'm misinformed, then I would appreciate someone correcting me.

Having voice enabled on my land will increase load on my computer. Right now, I have no issues, but its just one more thing fo rmy computer to have to deal with. I recall last summer with my last computer, I would have to disable music or my computer would strat to stress...and I could hear it in th emusic performance (stuttering, laggy sound streams)

The other reason I'm not using voice is that I'm usually on SL after my family goes to sleep (yes, I'm somewhat of a night owl ) and my talking on voice will wake up the family. I can see the benefits to it...(especilly since a coulple of my fingers are lazy and slightly dyslexic..hehe )...but the benefits do not outweigh the negatives.

Good point. I didn't think about that, as a possible reason, actually. It would be horrible to deal with, if voice were enabled in some of the larger establishments!

It is kinda unfortunate, and something I hope won't be a problem eventually, because the whole point of Voice is it's supposed to be *spatial*. Sitting at a table and chatting with a group of three people, you should be able to keep from disturbing people at an adjacent table. Stuff like that P:

Or because there are not only english speaking people in the location and i dont want to minorize any group. Is there a babbler for voice??

Or because it gets almost impossible to fight harassment in a larger club (how to copy/report voice to security?)

Or because i really dont want a link from the av to the rl person behind

Only if you choose to have it on.

I just got a group IM from an SL night club that I liked to hangout in to come and try the voice there. I would go there to listen to the music from the DJ as well. If people are going to use voice to communicate there then I guess it will be awfully quiet for me there from now on because I will have it disabled when/if I download the viewer (I never download an optional viewer for at least several days so LL can work out the bugs that inevitably accompany it and have no use for voice except to hear what others say in voice) so I can enjoy the music.
