I've read what I could fing on those, but have not found all the answers. I have also seen so many ads packed with keywords, that they come up for completely irrelevant keywords.
So, what are the rules on keywords? What does the search engine look at?

1) no rules really cept keep it PG 2) search engine looks for 'exact matches' there for 'free hair dress' will show up with search for 'free hair' and 'hair dress' but not 'free dress' 3) events are free to post. www.secondlife.com/events

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know about the exact match.
Do you know if looks at both title and contents? It doesn't seem to, on occasions.

Classfieds should look at both the title and the description when returning results although it is a bit tempramental. 'Search places' only looks at the words listed in the name of your plot and does not list results fromwords in the description field.
This may be irrelevant now, but a couple of years ago I was using completely unrelelated keywords in my classified ads to get my ad into more search results. Evidently someone complained to the powers that be because my classified was removed and I was told off by a Linden (i think it was Guy). I was threatended with suspension if I did it again.
Take into account that this was back when there were only a few hundred thousand accounts and only ever a couple of thousand online and the Lindens were allot more active in world. Now they have all run away and are hidding in the cupboard you may not get penalised for using unrelated keywords.

Putting unrelated terms into an ad in order to game Search is really disrespectful to fellow residents. It's significant theft of an Avatar's time if they TP to your location. - They arrive - They wait for the place to rez - They check if their attachments are in the right place, or even attached at all - Then they might spend time looking for the thing that your search term claimed they'd find there. - They might crash in TP - They might arrive and get an immediate 2nd magic TP - which always needs a relog in order to get moving again in my experience. Very bad karma! I've been tricked into a TP a few times. My opinion of the advertisers has been on a par with the people who run/use 16m ad plots. But then. I'm a grouch!

Just wanted to point out that I agree with you despite my earlier admission of guilt, I have since learned the ways of the world and I now actively IM people who come up in search results above my ads that have no business being there. It you do this and then threaten to report them to LL it's remarkable how many people ammend thier ads.

Yes, I agree that putting in completely unrelated keywords is a rotten, crass and greedy thing to do.
However, it doesn't matter how precise you are with your keywords and advertising, you're still going to get customers who bitch because you didn't have something you never even remotely hinted you had. o.O

LOL Verkin, customers can be challenging, but I've found that most are very pleasant and appreciate it if you try to help them find what they need. Porky, you old timer , I commend you for fessing up in public. I believe we all have done things that we are not so proud of. Sling, I have been there, and yes, it is irritating, particularly when one is looking for something very specific. Mmmm...does that make me a grouch too LOL? More questions: Does the search engine work the same way in Events and in Classifieds? I see some people use keywords separated by commas, some with and some without spaces, others just have keywords separated by a space. Which is the correct way?

I have a friend named Weard Welty {PLUG} a great artist, makes strange flexie sculptures in addition to painting..... {/PLUG} Anyway, she put up a Classified, and while testing it I tried searching for "weard". The search came up with Innovations. eh? wot? why? Then I looked in their keywords ".......professionalweardiscount....." Yup! "weard" is in there. This may be helpful to you - until some upgrade changes things
