"...a serious bug in the Second Life software is causing 5-minute lock-ups of the communication channel between simulators and our various databases. This is a difficult bug to describe, but essentially, we see a very tiny percentage of database queries stall indefinitely after returning their data. Our software notices after five minutes and re-starts the database client, but by then some number of queries have usually been lost. This causes affected sims to occasionally (or in a few cases regularly) experience inventory problems, search problems, transaction problems, the works. Without any code changes, the bug seems to have gotten more common over the past week; on Friday evening the engineers working on the problem identified a potential fix, which we’ll be testing over the weekend." --Ian Linden

I can't believe it took this long for someone to discuss this blog post!
I actually found it very open and informative. ![]() |

Oh, but there should be ...
You have the usual minority who actually understand that blog and nod knowingly. You have the OTHER usual minority who understand and then tell us how the technology used by LL is old, outdated, inappropriate, or plain wrong, and how they could fix all that given a year and unlimited funding. Then there are others, quite a few of them probably, who don't really understand or just don't care about that technical stuff anyway, but like the fact that so many details were communicated. And then, there's the usual rest who go like "IF IT'S NOT WORKING, SIMPLY GET NEW STUFF!", "HIRE MORE PEOPLE"!, "THIS WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT VOICE", and "FIX THE DAMN GAME INSTEAD OF WRITING LONG BLOG POSTS!" |

<snip> Then there are others, quite a few of them probably, who don't really understand or just don't care about that technical stuff anyway, but like the fact that so many details were communicated. <snip> I come under this group i'm afraid *blush*. I am so un-techie these days. I don't want to know how it works, I just want to push the buttons... like my telephone. But i do like that they talk to me, and they talk to people who are techie, and i can read the nods and understanding of those more techie than me, which is reassuring. Its good to know that LL care enough about the customers to tell them why things went wrong and actually apologise for it. I know i am preaching to the choir mainly, here, but this is a lot better than a "Thank you for your patience" blog post with comments closed. A lot less isolating. love imogen _____________________

This is probably a stupid question and I should not question my luck but I have not had any problems with missing inventory, nakedness, freezing etc. that other people are complaining about. Why is that? I don't have a new computer or video card, I use voice - I do have a cable connection but holy moly I live in the sticks so sometimes it just doesn't work that well. Yet still - I don't have these massive problems other people seem to have. I'm not begging for them so please don't come harrass me, I just don't understand technically why it happens to some people and not others. Can anyone educate me?

You may have been lucky and not tried to rez things on one of the bugged sims. |

bug is simulator based

"bug in simulator based!"..........................
I wonder if its due to the kind or cpu(s) they are using. Something is not working between the the game and the hardware. Now this can be a problem that will last and last and last. Just like rebaking ( put in the client UI a reset button and wa la YOUR REBAKED) If you cant fix it build in a do it yourself button . But with this bug in simulator its not that easy. And this might be a part of life for clients from now until who knows when. Don`t know how many more parts they can break in the game. Usagi |

Usagi I forget which JIRA I read it in, the bug seems to stay with a particular simulator, even after a restart on a different server. |

Can anyone educate me? *.I'd guess the problem is primarily sim-based, and based from personal experience favouring the SF sims compared to the Texas sims which always seem to hick-up one way or the other, and maybe the fact that not everyone's inventory is on the same server so maybe there's some luck in which asset server your inventory is placed on. |

The key cause of much of the trouble we have seen recently in SL is listed right there in the first paragraph. VPN. A VPN is an excellent choice for connecting two remote locations across the Internet when you need an inexpensive, secure connection and very high reliablitiy is not a major factor. VPNs are not nor were they ever intended to be a highly reliable mission critical data path. They are useful as a redundant backup of or for load sharing with a reliable data connection for such a mission critical application. Packet loss, loss of connectivity and highly variable latencies are inherant in the use of VPNs and they should only be used in situations where these conditions can be well tolerated.

I don't know what VPN's are, but that makes some sense to me. Because ever since they got that Texas location going, we've had these problems. Kinda makes me hate Texas. (J/k! I was born there!) coco _____________________
