Does anyone have any factual knowledge on EXACTLY what island owners will have to do about adult content ? Will we be forced to designate the entire island Adult , or can we subdivide the island into parcels and just designate a parcel as Adult ?
Please, no speculation in this thread. I need a factual answer, preferably from a Linden who knows the answer. Yes, I'm writing the Lindens right now.

This is the "Resident Answers" forum. If you wanted an answer directly from LL you are in the wrong place.
If you own a sim and want to have mature content in the sim you need to designate it as Mature. It is up to the owner of the sim to enforce any additional zoning. So if the owner doesn't want mature content below the 300m level then that is up to them to enforce.

This can't be answered by anyone other than a Linden that knows what the future plan is ... and non of them seem to know as much as we do about the whole affair . i can tell you to go and read the blog's again ..both of them , From what i can see it will be done by parcel and not by an entire sim . So the case is clear ... speculation is all you will get untill LL announce the full workings of this plan . for what its worth ...and i read .... it will be done via parcel .. so even though you don't want me to answer ..i will yes you can devide your sim into 2 sections or more

Adult Content

All parcels have an "Adult Content" flag that is separate from the Island's "Mature/PG" designation. This is an already-existing feature, and is almost certainly what will be used in this instance.

Daniel Linden was just talking about this at Robins office. He said that this hasn't been tested on Private Islands yet but that he expects it will work the same way mainland sims do.

No residents know any factual answers. Because the age verification hasn't actually happened yet, all any of us know is what's written on LL's blog.

Please, no speculation in this thread. I need a factual answer, preferably from a Linden who knows the answer. Yes, I'm writing the Lindens right now. According to the blog post: From: blog.secondlife.com http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/07/more-on-identity-verification/Age and identity verification will be completely voluntary. Residents who choose not to verify their identity will have access to all PG and M (Mature) rated regions of Second Life save for those individual parcels expressly identified by their creators as containing adult content. Adult content flags on the Mainland will be parcel-based, meaning that unverified accounts will be restricted only from the specific parcels containing adult material, not from Mature regions in general. ‘Adult Content’ is that which is overtly, graphically, or explicitly sexual in nature or intensely violent. In a previous blog post: From: blog.secondlife.com http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/04/age-and-indentity-verification-in-second-life/For their part, land owners will be required to flag their land as ‘adult’ if it contains adult content using the estate and land management tools provided to landowners. This flag will protect landowners from displaying inappropriate content to underage users who may have entered Second Life. Landowners are morally and legally responsible for the content displayed and the behavior taking place on their land. The identity verification system gives them new tools to ensure any adult content is only available to adults over 18 because unverified avatars will not have access to land flagged as containing adult content. And in that same previous blog post: From: blog.secondlife.com Second Life has always been restricted to those over 18. All Residents personally assert their age on registration. When we receive reports of underage Residents in Second Life, we close their account until they provide us with proof of age. This system works well, but as the community grows and the attractions of Second Life become more widely known, we’ve decided to add an additional layer of protection.
In a nutshell: * LL requires that new residents declare they are 18 or over at the time of registration * At the time of registration LL does nothing to VERIFY the information (I guess this is why the system "works well" * Landowners are required to tag their own land as Adult Content * If an underage person manages to make it onto your Adult Content parcel, for whatever reason, it's your fault * This is all part of LL's desire to protect you as a customer (as you're "morally" responsible for what happens on the land you pay for from the company that was unwilling to have some sort of verification system in place, while the Terms of Service make it clear that excluding a failure preventing logins in for more than 24-hours LL is not responsible or liable for anything). */rolls his eyes and sighs/* Okay... this is a "brother's keeper" argument in which a faceless corporation with a mediocre product, terrible support, and absolutely no clue as to who their customers are is _making_ you (a customer) a member of their "morality police." (Yes, "making," as failure to comply can result in Abuse Reporting and possible land consfication/account termination). This is also "squid pro quo" (a one-way transaction). In exchange for tagging your land as Adult Content you get what in return? Does customer service improve? Do you get a discount? Will the grid become more stable? Do the squids at LL improve their verification process during registration? LL's current bad media mentions over sexually-oriented ageplay, gambling, etc., are the result of their own bad decision to make registration open without verification. Should you be responsible for LL's bad decision? Are you, as a customer, obligated to help LL clean up its own mess? In a word: No. But you'll still have to tag your land.

It will make life much easier for island owners if this is the case.

I'm sort of wondering what the issue is here. If everyone on SL is required to be over 18, and if LL is going to disallow access of underage or unverified avatars to adult or mature parcels, then why don't we ALL switch our parcels to adult? The underage avatar would have nowhere to go and would leave SL.
Re: privacy, etc "I don't want someone knowing how old I am, it's none of their business, etc"... it's easy to claim this, but pretty much anyone with the possible exception of convicted felons can go down to City Court and look up your birthday. It's also probably posted somewhere on the trillions of internet pages out there....

The underage avatar would have nowhere to go and would leave SL. LL is doing nothing to "disallow" registrations from underaged persons. Registrations will remain "open" with the same challenge of "Are you 18 or over?" [Issue: Maybe this would be a good point to ask for a credit card] Verification would take place _after_ registration, in the event the person wishes to "verify" their account. [Issue: Hey, another good time to ask for a credit card] Verifications will be done by a 3rd party company. [Issue: LL has two modes: "understaffed" and "understaffed." Maybe if registrations weren't "open" there'd be enough people internally to deal with the problem. Maybe if registrations had never been "open" to begin with we wouldn't be having this problem.] According to the Terms of Service LL can't be held responsible if anything goes wrong with that 3rd party company: From: Terms of Service "5.2 Other service or product providers may form contractual relationships with you. Linden Lab is not a party to your relationship with such other providers.
Subject to the terms of this Agreement, you may view or use the environment simulated by the Servers through viewer software that is not the Viewer provided by Linden Lab, and you may register for use of Second Life through websites that are not Websites owned and operated by Second Life. Linden Lab is not responsible for any software used with or in connection with Second Life other than Linden Software developed by Linden Lab. Linden Lab does not control and is not responsible for any information you provide to parties other than Linden Lab. Linden Lab is not a party to your agreement with any party that provides software, products or services to you in connection with Second Life.
[Issue: When was the last time you had to bring along a third party to verify your age? When was the last time you had to bring along a third party, with a spotty track record, that someone else picked, to verify your age?] All landowners with adult content will have to tag their parcels as Adult Content. [Issue: Land that fails to be properly tagged as Adult Content can be Abuse Reported. However, with the introduction of " Estate Level Governance" private sim owners can handle Abuse Reports generated within their estates. What prevents them from not tagging their land and then intercepting any Abuse Reports concerning their untagged Adult Content parcels?]

Hi Steve,
The terms "adult" and "mature" are being used interchangably in a lot of places. I am assuming here that your inquiry is as to how the new age verification process will be implemented on private islands. As you know, it will be done on a parcel level on the mainland. As Daniel says in his blog post: Age and identity verification will replace ‘Payment Information’ in-world. You can currently set these at both the parcel and region-wide level. I believe that this is how the new system will be implemented.
Please watch the blog for further postings explaining how this will work as we get nearer to this becoming a reality.
Harmony Linden
