Friend of mine had some money "fail to transfer" from one of those "financial institutons"... he's contacted their support department. I've got my fingers crossed for him (L$8000).
I won't use them myself. Primarily because I don't keep much money in L$ at any given time.. since one error can make the money vanish, and LL bears no responsibility if it's lost. Of course, the moment that L$ is turned into $.. there's all KINDS of legal recourse if it should go missing.

I used a bank for a little while and only had a glitch in a deposit not showing up when the grid was glitchy. The bank owner was nice and got it straightened out in a few hours. I was nervous though, because it was a fairly big amount.

I dont see why anyone would trust money to anything like this.

Would you take the money out of your wallet and pass it through a knothole in a fence to give to a stranger who you have never seen before, and whose identity you have no way to verify, just because his voice says he will pay you interest on the "Savings" you deposit with him?
No?
Then why would you consider an SL bank any better? No way to verify who you are dealing with. No recourse if they take your money and run... Pure stupid gullibility, in my book.
Some may be legitimate, but as I have absolutely no way to verify that they are, and no recouurse if they turn out to be a scam, I will not give any "SL Bank" my funds. Period.
If I want to earn interest on my Linden Dollars, I'll cash them out and place the money in a Federally-insured real-world bank or credit union.

Whenever this question comes up (and it is a recurring question), no conclusive answer is given. There are lots of warnings, though, as people voice their skepticism and suspicions. Anyone who goes ahead and deposits funds in a SL bank does so over the stated reservations of almost everyone who posts. This also indicates that there are solid grounds for reasonable doubts regarding the banks. However, if they are ponzi schemes, none appears to have actually collapsed yet. There have been several instances cited of people temporarily losing their money, but having the problem corrected by the banks. Encouraging. Others cited problems still in the process of resolution (usually not followed-up on to let us know if they ever got resolved); not as encouraging. I've noticed that some of the SL companies listed on the World Stock Exchange ( http://www.wselive.com/trade) claim to invest some of their funds in SL banks. My guess is that if any SL banks are legitimate, some use the money on deposit to finance business projects within SL, in a similar way that some companies on the WSE use the capital raised through and IPO to expand their businesses. I am more skeptical about the SL banks that claim to be able to get good proceeds by investing outside of SL. Personally, I've had no dealings with any SL bank.

to their credit.. I will say that Ginko has been around for a long time. Though new accounts don't get the percentage rates that the older accounts got(get?)

I use Ginko and while the risk is there so are the returns. I have had 2 transactions of over L$200,000 get lost in transmission due to grid failures and both were quickly rectified by the bank. I have never lost money but accept the possibility that someday the whole thing can collapse. Sl is full of thieves who use all kinds of methods to steal from their fellow residents, to my knowledge the SL banks haven't stole any money but get the bad rap from some residents that they someday will. Who knows maybe the sceptics are right but in the mean time there are lots of residents who are getting interest from their idle L$. I don't currently have any idle L$ so have no money in the banks but have used them in the past and assumming I will be flush again in the future will use them again.

Desmond pointed it out pretty well in the last thread liek this. They are actually Ponzi schemes propped up by the fact that many people leave Online games without collecting all their virtual money. This aditional abandoned funds is keeping a sucessful one like Ginko them from collapsing. Basically any bank in SL will be unregulated. Linden Labs will do NOTHING to re-emburse anyone if an "investors" $Lindens are defrauded.

The only problem I have with Ginko is that when I first started playing, they had ATMs everywhere. Now I end up only using the one on Ginko Island. Its very rare that I see their ATMs anymore, and it make me nervous about putting any money into it. It just seems as if they are starting to implode.
