Autoreturn catastrophe

Trying to solve a small griefing problem, I enabled autoreturn on my land. I've been totally screwed doing this before (by not making sure everything was tagged right), but the stuff just went back to lost and found, and was more annoying than anything else.

Well, this time, enabled autoreturn, and **poof** several items were returned to my inventory. Well, no biggie right, went to find them and they were G-O-N-E.

Having read that this sometimes happened, I cleared my cache, and waited a few days. No luck.

Any other suggestions for finding the items (one was a rather expensive Contest Wizard (**crying**))? My tenant contacted LL about it, and, as I'm sure many of you have guessed, there's been no response.

A few updates back, a new feature was introduced where multiple objects which are being returned (by parcel autoreturn, or manually etc) are being "coalesced" into just one entry in Lost + Found. I'd recommend going through your Lost + Found folder and rezzing everything in there, to see if the returned objects were just grouped together under a weird name.

Better and more detailled explanation in the Knowledgebase: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=292

also make sure you rez your stuff in a large field. as its tough to anticipate where SL will consider the center-of-mass of the coelseced object. There is a chance your stuff could end up on your neighbor's property. There are serveral possbile consequences of this. The worst is that you may not realize what you have rezzed.

A large.... FLAT... field. Otherwise some of your things could rez inside a rolling hill (guilty of this myself) and you'll end up having to disable surface textures using the debug menu to find the object.

It would help to rez the things in build-mode, too.

The moral of the story here is the objects will rez in their original relative positions.

For example, let's say 2 items were returned to you, one from the first floor of a building and one from the second floor. They were "coalesced" into one item by SL. When you rez that from your Lost and Found, not only do you run the risk of burying something in the ground, but your item from the second floor will be way up in the air, as if it were still sitting on the second floor.

This is especially tricky if you don't know exactly what was reutnred or where it was. One might end up with objects floating in mid-air for several weeks until one actually manages to find them again. Not that I would have had that problem. *ahem*

Anyway, it's a tricky business. I wish SL would quit lumping everything together like that because it is much more difficult to use the lost and found folder now.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I did have a grandfather clock returned from a skybox. But, contest wizard in the sky is better than none at all, lol.

Oh boy... this is interesting. I have to have auto-return on because I have a border with a sandbox on one side, and another with some remarkably messed-up escorts with persecution complexes - kind of like living in RL between a golf-course and a home for beaten wives.

Is auto-return flakey when it's on then? the Escorts have sneered at me for leaving it off in preference to admitting that they are grotty flakey builders that drop stuff..!

And - can anyone suggest people who might like to advertise right on the border with a sandbox? I could do with a buffer zone!

I could build a fence or wall or something to that end around your property for you. Send me an IM if you want.

You know that another word for "construction" is "erection", right...?

Another tip for rezzing Returned items grouped into one object is to do so either in a Sandbox sim that will return any prims you don't see, or on the private sim of a friend (or a friend with a fairly large plot of land).

If on your friend's land, they can look on thier About LAnd>>Objects page and tell you if you still ahve objects left out, and can Return them again in the event you can't locate them due to placement/transparency/size. The Sandbox will simply Return them to your Lost&Found again and you get to to it all over again.

Faster with a friend, though both work.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

Thanks for all the advice.

I own a large piece of flat land, so I'll give it a go and let y'all know if I found the wayward wizard.

Oh, and escorts build lots of things, then enable autoreturn and lose them, lol.

Dearly Darling,

My home is by a sandbox in Mauve...and I live in Green! I finally gave up and on the first part of my property it is now no build!

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

It worked. I rezzed a house, a tree, a chair, my contest wizard, and a teleporter all out of one object!

WOO HOO. Thanks to everyone for the help.

dreaded coalesced strikes again
01-12-2007 14:51
Linden needs to put out a memo with big giant letters informing the community at large that this 'coalesced' feature exists. Ive been bitching for months about it since I emptied my trash one day and threw out a bunch of expensive missing items that I didnt know were attached to ' OBJECT' wall pieces from a three hundred prim maze I was tossing out.
This feature needs to be modified to be more user friendly, and at least everyone should be informed that this is a source of missing items.
