Mac Alternative to Shoutcast/Icecast?

Hey everyone,
I'm currently using Nicecast on my Mac to stream audio out to the internet (and it works fine)... but I can't seem to pick up anything on SL. I read that you need to go thru places like Shoutcast and/or Icecast to do this. Now... here's my problem... I went to both sites, and they say they do not support the Mac OS.

Does anyone know of some alternatives I can use to be able to stream my audio into SL?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read let alone possibly answer me back. My goel is to stream my own audio at future events.

Cheers,

You need to make sure you open up port 8000. If you are running the firewall built into OSX then you need to open it there or on your router. Once you can use the button in nicecast to determine if the stream is working, then it will work in SL. I stream straight from my laptop to SL.

Hi there,

As long as you have the port forwarding on your firewall/internet connection setup correctly as Jordan says, it should be fine.

Perhaps ask someone else to try to listen to the address? In SL you would need to change the url that nicecast provides and remove the /listen.m3u part from the end of address, so it might look something like http://24.28.193.1:8000

Nicecast will happy stream to an external shoutcast or icecast server, should you need to stream to move listeners than your connection would handle.

Hope that helps

Had same problem here, i got nicecast and i can now stream over the internet so people can tune in with iTunes, winamp and so on.

Open port 8000 on your firewall, also if u have a wireless router, surf to it to change the settings so that it also frees up port 8000, look into the help file of nicecast.

There's a check server button to see if your stream works.
Basically nicecast gives u a link (.m3u file)
So u can try with another computer if the stream works. (or ask a friend)

So, i talked to a club manager in sl, and it works differrent in sl than using iTunes & so.

It seems that I have to route my stream to the server of the club, which streams it to sl.
This will also keep the upload network low i guess so that's good when there's a lot of processor strain from sl and other programs.

So, what u have to do is ask the club owner for the club's server adress.
In nicecast, go to window>show server

There u can manually change the adress to which u'll be streaming. (the club's server adress)

It's a bit tucked away but it works.

Good luck!

Just to add what's already above..

If you are using the built-in nicecast server rather than sending the stream to a external shoutcast server to relay. Then normally the address would be based on your external ip address ( http://whatsmyipaddress.com/ will tell you if you don't know) and then the default port is 8000.

So if you external ip address was say 66.30.192.200 the address you would use is http://66.30.192.200:8000 in SL

If you saved the .m3u file and open an text editor, that should also have the address inside it.

If you use a firewall you would need to make sure that the port 8000 was set to forward traffic to your internal ip for the computer doing the broadcast. (this step is only needed if you are hosting the stream on your computer rather than sending the stream to an external server)

You might want to check this page too for some more details. http://rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/manual/English.lproj/help_server.html

Hope that helps.

(posters note: please swallow all beverages, foodstuffs and pie before reading to keep your monitor clean)

the best alternative I can think of, off hand, is MS Vista or XP.

(me feels the evil stares, hears a hundred people say "whaaaat!!" and swiftly runs for cover while giggling like a schoolgirl)

Just to be clear...
I DJ in SL and have both a graphics challenged Mac and a very fast PC.

/me gives Avacea a head slap for being JUST WRONG! DOH!:p

Stick with your Mac for your music, Siobahn. :D
