This thing that says some people can and own land is nonsense. No one owns anything. If you really owned the land you wouldn't have to pay any so called "Tier". Yeah, "Tier" some fancy word they threw in there to describe rent which is the same thing.

If anything in many instances you come off better just renting. Thus avoiding the large initial payment you must ante up just to get the land. Either way you still have to pay monthly. Own land? Yeah right!

If you use a certain tier for even one day you will have to pay for the full month :/

A fair comparision is that "owning" land is more akin to a lease.

You pay your lease (rent) and in most cases will also pay a premium to aquire the lease. However you can sell it on in most cases.

In some cases it is possible to make a profit by buying and selling on virtual land, but a free market dictates its own price therefore you need to plan

Hmm. I have never looked at Tier as "rent" to me its more like "tax". You can own land in RL but you still end up paying a yearly "tier". (not as exorbidant as SL however)

I think of 'tier' more as if it were a cell phone subscription.

A 500 minute plan has a flat rate, whether I use those minutes or not.

Fortunately, LL only bumps us up to the next tier instead of charging us 'overages' per day.

When you buy a condo, do you own it? Well gee, then why do you need to pay a condo fee? Or for that matter, with any house you pay property taxes. So I guess that means you don't really own it, you just rent the land from the government.

Needing to pay a perpetual maintenence fee doesn't change your ownership status.

You know what I find to be a better definition of "own"? You can sell the property and get your money back.

Thanks for telling me that I wish when they explain tier time in main page they included that information.
I tried to get customer support information or something explaining this but no reponse.
Oh well I figured I spent close to 100 usd or more and I won't do it again if this is how its going to be in future. Its seems like I really wouldn't matter unless I was spending over 4k a year or generating lot of Linden dollars and I have only been here a few weeks.
