So i have these 10x10x.01 large floor tiles that i'm trying to link together. I can get a 4x4 panel together nicely, but if i add a fifth one on any side, i cannot link (Failed: Pieces too far apart).
So, dumb newbie builder question of the day, is there a way around this?

From the LSL wiki: "10x10x10 objects will only link if they are within 32m of each other. Smaller objects mean much smaller distances. Two 1x1x1 meter objects, for example, need to be something like within 7m of each other." The linked article above has some tips, as well.

Under normal circumstances, anything larger than a 3x3 grid (9 prims) of 10m x 10M flat prims will fail. If you managed to get a 4x4 grid (16 prims) to link, they probably won't remain linked if you rotate them, or if you take them into inventory as a linked object and try to put the linkset back out into SL again.

Can this problem be solved by aligning the pieces and then locking them in place relative to each other? They wouldn't actually be joined but it seems like the effect would be the same.

Nope, the floor i'm using has some texture scripts in it that require linkage to work. I'll have to see if i can use more than one 3x3 block or something, then. Thanks

You can link smaller objects in the pattern you want, then stretch them to the size you want. The problem with this technique is twofold. 1) The prims de-link upon rezzing. (only an issue if you want to pick them up again as one piece) 2) Sometimes prim-alignment is off a few decimal points when stretching linked prims. Dependant on build. ~Jessy

my solution Link into as many large chuncks as necessary Go to the scripting wiki and get the builders buddy scripts(from the library on the wiki) Follow the instructions in the scripts. Another option buy Rez Foo (although more expensive it is wonderful)
