Slurl Maps and TPs from LMs?

I have recently downloaded the "official" LL viewer and also a version of Emerald onto my new PC. I was always used to being able to click on Slurl location I wished to visit and then TP to that place inworld. However, all I get now instead of the TP is a request to download another viewer, which of course I already have, before I would be able to move.

Any help or advise gratefully accepted.

Oh, and a Happy New Year to all.

PS: How does one get these smiley icons to work? IE: to be placed where one wants them in the prose.

I'm guessing that slurls fail when using emerald?

probably because of the security patch that SL instituted, and offhand I think that you have to edit the registry to point to the emerald client to get it to work right for emerald (but then you'd lose it for the regular client)... but i'm a little fuzzy on it all because I hardly ever use slurl.

Thanks Void.

Actually it doesn't work for the SL 1.23.5 viewer either. I tried the "official" map page main SL website today and that doesn't work either.

What happens with both viewers is that on clicking the "Visit this location" button I get an invitation to download the already existing viewers. Clicking on the existing viewers in the invitation page is where they try to download again.

As this never used to happen before I change PCs I wonder if or where I might need to make an adjustment. I often found it was easier to find a particular location by Slurl than by the viewer's own map which can be rather slow to load at times.

It works as expected for me. Did you install the viewers automatically or change their location? When you look at the "Visit" link and right-click "Copy Link Location" what is it showing? Maybe it just doesn't have the correct pathway to get from there to your viewer and so thinks you have not got it installed.

What if you open the viewer first, then click the "Visit" link? I like to have a viewer open before I hit a SLurl so I get the particular viewer I want to use.

@ Osprey
I recently bought a new PC and installed the viewers on it. That's why I'm wondering if it it's something on the PC rather than either the slurl/map websites that's preventing the sending of the LM/TP info to the viewers.

I've tried your suggestions, thankyou, but they don't work either. I found that with the "Copy Link Location" idea I ended up spending more time cleaning up the link for the "search" box than I would waiting for the viewer map to load.

Ah well, I didn't use that method of TPing that often and I may find a way round the problem one day - these things sometimes sort themselves out when you are looking for something entirely different.

Well, I was just thinking that if you had installed it into a different location it might not know where to go. What OS is it? Does this mean that on whatever OS that is SLurls work for no one?

I use Emerald and SLURL web-to-viewer links work fine for me. Have you tried restarting your PC since you installed Emerald?

Regarding the smilies, when I edit a post, there are two sets of smiley icons, one on the right for placing a smiley in the body of the post, and one at the bottom for setting a smiley for the entire post. The smilies on the right work properly for me - :D .

For the problem of opening SL links, what operating system do you use and what browser?

I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the Linden Lab SL viewer and see if that makes the browser call the SL viewer when you click on an url.

I am often using an SL viewer that I know won't work with the SLurl map. What I do is right click the "Teleport Now" link, and copy it. Then I paste it into a chat window in SL. Then I can click the highlighted link in the chat window. The link will be of the form "secondlife://simname/x/y/z" like this one: "secondlife://Ahern/0/0/0". There is no cleaning up needed.

In Windows XP there is a spot in the registry at

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secondlife\shell\open\command

that has the default handler for things of the form "secondlife://"

The value for that on my system is currently set to open such an url with Snowglobe. It looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\Snowglobe\SnowglobeTestBuild.exe" --channel "Snowglobe Test Build" --settings settings_snowglobetestbuild.xml -url "%1"

If you are on Windows XP then there should be an entry in the registry at that spot that has a similar but not identical value, differing based on which viewer is supposed to be the default secondlife:// handler and where you have the viewer installed.

I'm not familiar with exactly how this works on Vista or Win7, and not at all on Mac or Linux.

In Windows XP, the registry setting described above is not the only place that might be involved. The browser can also have a setting in it. In the browser I'm currently using, Firefox, I can do Tools / Options / Applications and type in "secondlife" and it shows "Use Second Life (default). If I open the dropdown box I see options for "Always Ask", "Use Second Life (Default)", "Use Second Life", "Use Other", and "Application Details".

I think this lets me tell Firefox to open secondlife links with whatever viewer I want, assuming the viewer is set up to accept locations passed to it in the way the browser will pass them to an application.

I have a cold or some such. My nose is running, my head is throbbing, I'm coughing (not a bad cough yet, though). Sorry for typos or mal-formed sentences and such.

Good luck.

@SuezanneC.

You have my deepest sympathies and I hope you'll feel better soon.

Whilst typing as now I only see one set of smilies at the bottom of this block of the page. Wonder where the others are? Not to worry, really unimportant.

Thanks for such an informative reply but even after, harrumph, far too many years of computer use I never go near the registry. Far too scared. Ok, I know I'm a wimp.

I'm using Windows 7 which was pre-loaded on my brand new "gaming" PC (my Xmas present to myself) so I'm still getting used to both of them but I am, of course, using Firefox as my browser. (I do so wish I could put smilies in where appropriate.)

I'll try your suggestion of a reload of the SL viewer and if that doesn't work then I'll have a go at copy and paste your way.

Have a hot whisky toddy and curl up in a nice warm bed and hopefully you'll recover quickly.

I'll report back if/when things are successful.

PS: Darned if I can find an "edit" button anywhere either.

Try going to UserCP ( User Control Panel ) which is at http://forums.secondlife.com/usercp.php?

Then to "Edit Options" which is at http://forums.secondlife.com/profile.php?do=editoptions

Then down to the bottom of the page in the section labeled "Micscellaneous Options" there's a dropdown list with an option for "Standard Editor - Extra Formatting Controls".

That's what works for me.

SuezanneC, firstly, I hope you're feeling a bit better and secondly, you're a genius. Your way of copy and paste into a chat window works perfectly. Many many thanks. :)

Waiting for the viewer map to load can take ages if one wants to TP to the other side of the world to a previously unknown, unvisited place. As an avid explorer I can now (almost) click and go once more.

Thanks too to all those who also helped. I think I might be getting the hang of this smilie business too.
