LL does not cancel your account immediately but considers it canceled when your subscription would be normally expired.
If you happen to have owned land but did not sell it or give it away, you would be charged tier on that land even though you submitted a cancellation order.
For example; your tier is 195.00 a month, you cancel your account with 364 days remaining and for whatever reason did not unload your land, you would be charged 2,340.00 for an account which has been canceled.

If I cancel a paid subscription to something, I would expect nothing less than that it ends at the next billing cycle. But it does not hurt if LL would tell that the tier continues till the end of the subscription, if it is confusing people.

If I had that much land, I'd sell it and cash out before cancelling. I would think most other people might do same ... but thanks for the heads up

Your example isn't so much an example ("Here's what will happen..." but a hypothetical ("Here's what I think might happen..." . After cancelling the account the resident's parcel(s), if any, would be considered abandoned after thirty-days (and fall into possession of the Governor Linden account) and placed in the auction queue. Why? Because LL gives a cancelled account up to 60-days to reactivate their account and recover their possessions. Though the cancelled account's inventory carries no charge the land would, as it exists in-world (If this was a workable dodge for paying tier fees people would "cancel" their accounts all the time only to return after 29-days).

I'm confused! If you cancel your account then surely it's active until the next subscription cycle. That's why they'd still charge you a tier for land you own, because technically you're still active.

It is counterintuitive if you expect "cancel" to mean "canel". A good tip, TC.

there is a very simple way to 'not be billed'
cancel the credit card / paypal debit agreement used with the billin on the account when you cancel the account.

I was under the impression that LL does not allow accounts to be cancelled (except for defaulting on payment) as long as there is any SL land held by that account.

But since you did such a fine job of re-wording my post and explaining what I really said or hypothetically "meant" to say, go get the cookie jar and reward yourself.

From: TC Bing Hardly. I posted what I received in an email from LL.
But since you did such a fine job of re-wording my post and explaining what I really said or hypothetically "meant" to say, go get the cookie jar and reward yourself. Thanks for the cookie, nummymuffins... but as we have no idea what the magical e-mail actually says (you failed to provide clear attribution of something like "this came directly from an e-mail from LL" in your OP) I'm going to go with what appears on the Cancel Account page: From: Cancel Account Still Want to Cancel? If you still want to cancel your account, click the cancel button below. You can reactivate your account by [30-days from today] your land and in-world objects will still be there, waiting for you. If you reactivate by [60-days from today] your Second Life name, avatar and inventory items will still be yours. After [60-days from today] if you decide to rejoin Second Life, you will need to begin with a new account. Based on that the worst that could happen is get pinged once on the next billing date.
