Very simple way to help you TP

For those who have continued problems with failed teleports, I've been looking for a work-around and I think I may have found one.

We all know TPs are effected by a number of things. Asset Server problems, sim-lag, and scripts/prims on attachments. The first two, we can really not effect. However, doing some testing, I have found a way to reduce the load of the attachments (without removing them).

Ctrl+Shift+Alt+9 (Or from the CLIENT >>> RENDERING >>> TYPES >>> VOLUME on the extended Debug Menus. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Alt+D to show this menu option.)

This is the quick command for rendering of SImple Objects (ie prims). By selecting this option, the world turns pretty blank. Buildings gone, roads gone, prim-hair and the rest of your attachments gone (though only from rendering on your Client. Everyone else will still see you the same).

During testing I TPed without error throughout a day within SL. (@6 hours with @25-30 TPs) For the test, I was wearing 1136 prims worth of attachments. Scripts carried were my AO, a coffee cup (with sip animation), a tail script, psiTEC, proTEC, Black Widow Pistols, a Teleport Effects HUD, POWtech Land Defense HUD, and a MultiGadget. While I choose my scripts for lowest lag possible, I tried to place as much as I could for a "stress test".

I'm not sure if this actually has an effect, or was a fluke, but I had been having problems with TPs, esspecially from Islands to Mainlands, nearly constantly. Using this rendering selection, TP were not only error free, but also faster than normal.

A question in with this would be if anyone would know if by not rendering attachments, if the scripts within them are somehow "muted" by the system as well for TPing? This is beyond my scope of abilities to determin.

I hope this helps anyone having problems TPing.

As I am lazy and hate have to detach and reattach my attachments, I'm gonna give this a shot when I get in world.

Hmm, if it's got less things to figure out maybe it'll get less confused. I spent most of last night removing my hair, shoes and jewellery from my butt when I TPd - would be nice to avoid that!

Ooops! Sorry. Posted the wrong menu tree in my original post. Quick command is still the same but is CLIENT >>> RENDERING >>> TYPES >>> VOLUME.

Fixed in original as well. *blushes*

Tried Ctl-Alt-Shift-9 today when I couldn't tp out of a place. Worked like a charm. Just do it again after you arrive to toggle the objects, etc. back on.

Great find, Jessica!

I'll have to try this. It's odd if it even works considering that attachments are actually handled by the sim itself. It treats them like prims that just happen to have your coordinates. So turning off their display for you shouldn't really have any effect. But SL is weird

I'll add it as a suggestion for all the angry LH callers who can't tp :). If it doesn't work I'll send them your way :p.

A nice set of prim boots can get right up there.

*bumps back with a question*

Anyone know a good way to get this information out to to more people? I know only a small percentage read the forums and only the rare Linden anymore.

Suggestions/Ideas?

~Jessy

P.S. I already put up notecared givers with my original post at place I can.

Is it just me, or does it make absolutely no sense that a viewer rendering option affects the functioning of the database in taking you from point A to point B. I mean, it's purely client side - why should a client side option screw up the asset databases, which track where you're supposed to be at any given time? I find that extremely disheartening.

Tried it a couple of times over the last few days - sadly, it didn't help a single time :-(

I was also wondering the same thing.

Maybe TP failures are really a timing issue and dropping the rendering cost way down makes the window big enough that TPs will work more reliably? Or maybe the client is smart enough to not request info on things that it doesn't need to render any more and this reduced load makes TPs happier?

Both sound a bit far-fetched but I can't see any other reasons why it'd help. Then again, I rarely have TP problems so maybe it is a client-side thing or at least has a bigger client-side component than people usually believe..

That's a really good trick if it works (I need to try it)

Generally, take off primmy attachments, sometimes helps.

I also find sometimes it's the region you're trying to get to which is the problem (or the handshake from where you are to where you want to go). Sometimes I try tping to another sim (eg my home location) and it works, then I tp to where I wanted to go ultimately.

Finally, if you are really trapped, there is an option in the login page (preferences I think) to choose the region to log into (gives you a dropdown box with last location, home location and type the region you want to log into). What I do if I'm really stuck is to logoff and then log on choosing the region I want to go to....that ALWAYS works for me.
