I have searched the Wiki but although the terms are used, they are not really defined.
I would like to know the exact definition of:
Parcel
Region
Estate
Sim
and what if any hierarchical relationship they have to each other.

Parcel = Portion of a Region/Sim that has been individually cordoned off for ownership/sale.
Region = 'Sim' or 'Estate'. An entire named 256 x 256 server-space. From what I'm able to tell, generally no more than 2 sims or regions will share a single server-box (I could be wrong) and these are never set next to eachother. Sim = See region. Interchangeable. I prefer 'region' to sim. Estate = A 'private island' or privately owned region/sim rather than a mainland region/sim. _____________________

I prefer 'region' to sim. Estate = A 'private island' or privately owned region/sim rather than a mainland region/sim. A Sim is technically, the software that runs on the server. In general, one sim runs one region. Sims are usually run one per processor core. So a Class V dual-processor, dual-core server will be running 4 sims, each sim running one region. There are some exceptions, void regions with a reduced prim count run 4 per sim. Max |

I prefer 'region' to sim. Estate = A 'private island' or privately owned region/sim rather than a mainland region/sim. Correct with one excetion. Estate = 1 OR MORE sims owned and managed as a group by the same person. By defining more than one sim as being in the same estate, the estate manager and sim owner can manage all of them with a single ban list. My take: Sim = 65,536 M2 of land, operating on one physical server. (OpenSpaces Sims have 4 regions operating on one server. 4x the total land area, but 1/8 the prim count per region.) Region: A measure of area, equal to 65,536 M2 of land, which may consist of one or more parcels. You could own "one region of land" and have that spread over multiple sims. Parcel: A piece of land in a single sim, at least 4m x 4M in size, or at most 256 M x 256M in size, owned by one person or by a group (Deeded land). The boundries of a parcel can not cross the borders of the sim that hosts it. Estate = One or more sims, on Private Islands, with the same owner and managed as a single group. _____________________

This is interesting. It seems there is not 100% agreement on this. Does that mean everyone's been left to work it out for themselves and come up with slightly different answers? This is a good example of where a Linden-written reference would come in handy

Hmm I didn't find that page really addressed my question. I already found that before I posted.
If I can find a suggestions box I am going to ask for a proper glossary. There's a lot of jargon to learn when you join SL ![]() |

All this cross-threading of terms is causing the bolts in my head to fall out.
All i'll have left soon is a cranium full of nuts. |

There's a lot of jargon to learn when you join SL ![]() Yeah, it's not really "spelled out" on that page per se, but it does give a huge clue by stating that there is a control panel tab for the "region" and a separate one for the "estate", thereby denoting that they are not the same. The knowledge base is a good thing, and since it's supposed to be "Your world, Your imagination", we residents are often left to puzzle some things out on our own. If you find the suggestion box could you also make a suggestion to eliminate lag, bots, SSN & passport verification, 16m squares and TP failures? ![]() |
