Sorry if this seems a really dumb question but I am a little confused about putting a house on a 512 piece of land. When i arrived at Help Island I was given a BSD Archer house and an Alpine Cabin, but how will I know how big they and if they will fit on a 512, also when buying furniture, how do you know how many prims the item is if it isn't on the price info. Apologies once again but i have hunted all day for the answers without success. Any help gratefully received, thanks.

Hi there, fairly new myself but will share my experience.

House size. If buying usually the advertisment will have the size lot or size of house on it. If not take to a sand box and rez then measure it. Also right click item in inventory and see if info is in the properties. Prim count is.

Furniture in stores if rezzed is easy. Right click and edit then hit more tab to see how many prims. Either add them all or what the land prim total go up to see how many you have left. Sometimes I can hit buy and right click item before accepting the buy to see what in folder and properties.

If you have a parcel of land. Goto world and my land to check prims or when on land about land to see how many prims it has available.

Hope this helps and is not to confusing for you.

In the case of objects that are set out on display or set for 'buy copy' you can right-click the object and select Edit. In the General tab you should see the number of prims, like '1 object, 14 Prims' or something like that.

For objects that are sold out of a box or a vendor, you really can't find out. Unless the seller has indicated on the literature, or you IM and ask them, there's no way to know ahead of time.

You can sometimes get a good idea by looking at the picture, but it takes time and experience to 'train' your eye for that. (And when you have 'too much' experience in SL you may find yourself doing it in RL -- looking at furniture or buildings and guesstimating how many prims they use!! :-)

With houses though I would think it should be the proper thing for the seller to indicate a) the number of prims the house uses, and b) the footprint of the house. I know when I had my first 512m of land, I bought some L$1 buildings at the Gnubie store, only to find that most of them would not rez because they used more than the 117 prims that were available.

Finally, for houses at least, do some searching around. I know there is at least one group that provides free houses which were designed specifically for 512m plots -- the houses all use less than 40 prims and are sized to fit in the standard 16m by 32m rectangular 512m plot.

ps I see Autumn beat me to the punch :-)

.. and when you find you're looking at hair styles and counting prims .. it's time to lie down in a darkened room! ;)

I had a freebie house which went onto my 512 plot only one way round. Unfortunately the windows did not face the setting sun so I took the brave (for me!) step of editing it so I could turn it round. This is a good first step to building. I did have a backup copy though for when I fubared it ;)

Heheh I don't know how to make hair yet so I can't even guess how many prims are in a style.

Great point about editing / building... Of the L$1 freebie houses I tried, the one that did fit was full perms (mod/copy/trans) and I too started editing and tinkering. And the rest, as they say, is history. Great way to learn how things are put together (in RL as well as SL) is find something that interests you and take it apart. Even if you break it, you'll learn something along the way.

well, it's not so much the counting as the strange look you get from the passer by when they see you staring!
Just waiting for when I completely lose it and ask "Is that a Naughty skin?"
