I've been looking around the place trying to find large areas with the damage turned on, but it seems there aren't very many that I can find. Where exactly do people go to combat with guns and other heavy weaponry? I want to find land where you can kill whoever you want at any time using any weapon... does it exist?

Search "combat" or "military". I'm not into that phase fo the game but I've seen places that are what you are looking for. Most people don't want to be "killed" and have to log off and back in to stay in the virtual world....understandable. :)

But, yes, I do believe such places exist.

Go to the sims Rausch or Jesse. Both are combat sims. Raush is modern warfare, Jesse is, I think, the Wild West? I avoid both like the plague, so I wouldn't know.

Most Players do not consider SL to be a shooting game. If you seek that, then World or Warcraft or something similar is probably more to your taste than SL ever will be.

LOL no disrespect meant but I laughed a few weeks back. I was standing on a beach chatting with someone who had just orientated and come into the mainland. I was helping them out with some of their questions but generally chatting.
Some cyberstormtrooper wandered up with his laser rifle zapping red beams out at all and sundry .. including us! 'I need 50$' he says.
'Sorry' I'm cleaned out I replied and went back to IM with my newcomer.
Silence for about three or four minutes. 'Hm, ok' and off he wanders.

At this pint I think my newcomer spat coffee over his monitor :)

Go to rausch or jessie, there you can attack anyone with whatever you have. BUT, both places are pretty much empty 24/7 because *SURPRISE* nobody likes to be shot at.

But surely..

.. surely there are other places besides just those two? I and my friends encounter people all the time insistent on shooting people in sandboxes, and I would love to have a nice list of places to offer them where they could go shoot at each other to their hearts' content without violating the sandbox rules or the Terms of Service.

Toxia City, but you have to use the DCS system. Not too hard to pick up (50 lindens), and roleplay to boot.

and it works any place dcs does..there are alot of themed areas

There are combat venues that are smaller than a whole sim, most of which have their own scripted systems for combat resolution - you can't just use any weapon you please in the swords arena in an oriental sim, for example. If you search the forums for "Combat" and for "Arena", you'll probably find several threads that mention smaller combat venues.

While it is possible to do combat activities in SL, the majority of residents don't want to do that, and object to being invoilved in combat against their will. That is why so many sims have not got damage enabled. For many, if not most, of us, a "damage enabled area" equals "someplace I will never willingly set foot upon".

In my opinion and experience thus far, 99.95% of the people who insist on shooting people in sandboxes are either kids that didn't bother to read a single word about what SL is and how it works, and who think it's no different from Unreal Tournament, World of Warcraft, or some other First Person Shooter game - or they are griefers, intent on getting their jollies from ruining everyone else's experience. The kids need to be educated. The griefers need to be banned for life.
