I don't think you can really tell whether a well-scripted weapon is worth buying from a freebie. In fact, I've seen some roleplaying regions where the rules prohibit free weapons, on the principle that they're too poorly scripted. You're better off finding a peaceful hangout where people who play the sort of games that interest you hang out, and seeing what they prefer. Or find one that's polite to non-combatants, and see what others are actually using. If you're thinking of getting a handgun just to defend yourself, but not get into the playing, then don't bother. That would be liking using a BB gun to stop a fully armed combat soldier.
