You can try a program called FRAPS.

Some people I know, do have issues with it, due to their computer specs, others are running it fine.

You can also try Snag-it. It will create an .avi file of your screen or any part of it, but make sure you have plenty of HD space.

I use the Video Out on my Graphics Card

I prefer to mirror my graphics to the S-Vhs out on my video card.

I start SL in Fullscreen Mode, then I send the signal to a Mini-DV / S-Vhs Video Deck. After I capture the signal to the deck, I go into my Editing Program and recapture the good sequences that I want.
I capture them at a higher resolution than the standard NTSC 720x480 TV Standard (this allows me to crop out the parts of the screen like the buttons and all.

This process requires certain equipment, which I currently use anyway. It has its drawbacks, but the benefits are way better than using a Screen Capture Program. I dont have to worry about dropped frames and a small window this way.

Most of the time I dont bother with sound, because I create voiceovers and music later. If I am doing an instructional video, I will have my microphone go straight into the back of the VCR (Through a small Mixer that I use).

This is a great start for the price of $150

You can get by with a standard VCR, but I recomend going at least MINI-DV. If you have a Mini-DV camera with firewire, that will work much better.

Long story short, SL doesn't have video capturing built-in. You need to use external tools to record what you're seeing, and there are some great suggestions above.

I don't know the link offhand, but I think Electric Sheep has tutorials on doing machinima.

SL does have video capturing built in - it just doesn't work for everyone at the moment, and doesn't capture sound.

The client theoretically *does* allow video capture but I've never gotten it to work on the Windows client. On the Mac client it seems to work, but it kills performance when the window is at any reasonable size. Perhaps on some newer Macs it might work better.

I recommend FRAPS as well - I even paid for it - though if you have the kit available, recording to DV is another good option.

You might like to check out the alt-zoom wiki on machinima:

My bad. Technically SL has video capture built-in, but it sucks so bad that it's better if you forget you know that.

I like Fraps an awful lot. There's a free demo. ;)
