Under what circumstances can you now tell when someone is online (without IM'ing them)? Only when they are within a certain distance, or on your friends list?

1) if they are on your friends list AND have allowed you to see their online status

2) if their calling card is in your folder

3) if you have a HUD or similar device that lists avatars within a range and they happen to be in range

4) if they have an online indicator somewhere in-world that you can physically see

There may be a couple I missed, but that is pretty much it.....

Or if you search for their name then click on it to view their profile.

If they are online it will show they are online. If they are not online it will leave the 'online' area blank.

The only thing that has changed is you can't search for people based on whether they're online or not.

-- except -- you can now click a tab that says your online status is hidden to everyone but friends. But it's not clicked by default.

Is this profile online indication function actually working like it seems to be supposed to?
Does it just take so long to show up most people would have fallen asleep by the time the indication arrives?

Does everyon set things such that only their friends can see if they are online?

Or is it just that with millions of people registered and only 30,000 or less onlne the odds of finding someone by scrolling through the search rwsults are so low that I lose interest in seeing if this function works before someone shows up as online?

With scripted devices like this one?:

I am thinking that if someone has your avatar key, they can script a device to notify them when you COME ONLINE.

SuezanneC, I think they prolly have the option turned on in their preferences to allow others to see them online...just guessing..unless the new feature that LL just installed is already bugged.
