Edit -> Preferences -> Communication tab -> Make my online status visible only to my friends.
Check that and your online status will not be shown to all in the search.
You can then pick and choose what friends can see you online with the powers in the friend window.

Unless you go to Busy mode and you have set your automatic Busy answer to match the one people get when IMing you while you're offline

And there are devices that will show if your online or not... no matter what is set in your preferences or on your friendlist..... or your busy-mode for that matter.

This is a big beef with me. I have my fingers in alot of pots in SL, projects, groups, businesses, etc. When I log on, I need the first 15-20 minutes to myself to catch up on work. However, within seconds of logging on I get new IM's. Not just the backlogged ones, but new ones. Drives me batty.
