Cool! Thanks for link. I downloaded and had a go with it. I've already noticed why it is still in beta, but it looks promising so far. I went for push-talk with and without toggle, nice feature that. The animation above my avatar's head when I speak, is far from the ugly thing that we saw in a video on Youtube recently; it looks much better now.

From: Colette Meiji invite some greifers I doubt an invitation will be needed. I forget now, is voice a parcel property? If so, does anyone own any land in Beta so as to test how turning it off works?

From: Colette Meiji They shoudl invite some greifers to the Voice betta so people can evaluate how fun voice greifing is gonna be http://www.ridhughz.demon.co.uk/wav/madcow.wav I hope that didn't break your immersion too much. It's already incredibly easy to annoy people if you're that way inclined. We've always had .wav sounds in SL. So stick that tongue back in!

There's a free voice changing program at http://www.screamingbee.com/product/download.aspx . The free one isn't too fancy but it does seem to change your voice. I think I got it working in SL by changing the default voice recording device in the sound part of the control panel to Screaming Bee Audo Driver. There is some noise in the background when the morphing is turned on. I don't know if this would be the case with pay programs. Part of the noise I was hearing turned out to be a box fan blowing in the background, but there was still a bit of mosquito noise with the fan turned off. I'm not turning the air conditioning off, so if it's picking up the air conditioning noise from across the room, some other solution will need to be found. The "pro" version of the program is 40 bucks, I'm not paying 40 bucks till I try some more hopefully get some feedback from some other folks that have tried it. I'm not expecting to fool people with voice changing just hoping it might be fun. Otherwise my comment on the sound quality of our normal voices is that the distance dropoff needs to be adjustable. Maybe you could position a sphere on the screen and everything inside the sphere would be the same volume. Or click people and designate them as people you want to hear whether they are far or near.

I hear nothing but bad things about vivox and what it does to computer settings.

I was attempting to be a lil bit silly - evidently the voice griefers are already common enough that theres no humor left =/
No - Ive never greifed anyone.
Sorry for any comments that bothered anyone.

I've been testing it a while. yea it needs more development, but not a lot more. Just permission stuff. I think there needs to be group permissions allowing only specific roles to talk on voice chat but anyone be able to listen if they have it enabled. This way you don't have to worry about outsiders coming in and shouting really loud insulting you.

Tried it last night. For me the problem was that there was no way to know who was speaking in a group of people. We were all standing around in a circle in Da Boom, and we heard each other just fine, but who was saying what wasn't clear. In text, you have an Avatar name to all typed chat and IM's. That was the one peeve on voice chat beta. I guess I'll have to learn to distinguish voices of my pals in SL. How I will function in a group, I don't know. How do you address one person's words in a group of people, when you don't know why said what?

another advantage for the popular people
03-29-2007 07:07
Another forum in which the loudest, most agressive and most charismatic will dominate. Yeah, we needed that.
Where else would all the beautiful popular people go if the Lindens didn’t extend yet another advantage to them? Thanks, LL!

Well, I'll give it a try tonight, and see just how bad it is for someone who won't use Voice to co-exist with those who think Voice is great.
I am at least heartened by the reports that for those who don't have a headset, they get no indications that Voice is in use. For me, I'd rather not see the clutter on my screen.
I don't even know where the sound input port is for my Mac Mini, so I can't try it with a headeset even as an alt, unless I spend money for a USB headset that I would have absolutely no other use for. Though I'd be sorely tempted to do at least some 'testing' with my child playing the TV loudly in the same room... and my dog barking... and my cat yowling...
Has anyone tried using a headset designed for a cell phone? I do have one of those, that I use with my office desk phone for work phone conferences. But I thought someone said the inexpensive phone headsets don't work? Of course, I would still have to figure out how to connect it...

Ceera, most phone headsets have a combined mic/output jack plug whereas PC (dunno about Mac) have separate jacks for mic and headphone.

Fantastic! This is a feature I've been dying for for years!
Any idea the ETA of this being included in the main client?
[EDIT]
This feature is hilariously awesome

I tried to play the "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme song for everyone but it crashed two minutes into the song.
But I guess that's ok, I don't think anyone was enjoying the song but me.

I’ve been on it for some time and find that most people are courteous and thoughtful with regards to domestic background noise. There have been a few greifers but they are easily dealt with by either muting them or worse. Often folks are just overly excited with this feature and need a little time to calm down and get the childishness out of their system (including me).

I can now see this feature being good and bad; it adds voice to the game, sure, but it kind of breaks the facade that avatars create in the first place.
