I bought a nice leather sofa to make my newbie pad a little more welcoming and comfortable. It was no copy/no modify so when I dropped it on the floor and placed it, it disappeared from my inventory. So far, so good.
I log in a few hours later and my sofa is gone, nowhere to be seen! It's not in my house, it's not in my inventory, all I have to show for it is a depleted L$ balance! So here's my newbie question: could someone have stolen it? I know they couldn't 'take' it, but if the 'Anyone can move' flag was checked then would then have been able to slide it out through the wall and take it somewhere else, without actually changing the ownership? And if so, is there any way that I could find it again given that it's not showing up in my inventory?
I hope this isn't a really dumb question. The only thing I can think is to throw myself on the mercy of the sofa vendor (who will have confirmation of the transaction) and ask for a replacement.
Thanks for reading! DeSilva Reiner

I doubt someone stole it.....
It's more likely that you rezzed it and it disappeared. I, as well as many many many SL users have experienced this same thing.... which is why I will never buy another object again until SL completely resolves this problem.
The easy thing to do is ask the creator for another one. Just explain the situation. They will probably want to give you another sofa. If they don't then don't ever buy anything from them again. If they do, then you know have a favorite store.

Also check your lost and found folder in inventory and your trash folder in inventory. If you are renting and you were not wearing your rental group it would most likely be returned to lost and found. You can also look for a light bluish color on the mini map. You will notice any the items you won out in the world are shown in this color. It might help you track it down if it was just moved.

conversely, if the item was transferrable, you may be out of luck. The seller may beleive you gave/sold it to someone, and elect not to replace it.
Hopefully this won't be the case, or hopefully it was relatively inexpensive.

Sometimes, too, when I'm in a very laggy situation, items will not rez (or rez fully) for me, will be undetectible, but will be there. Try walking over the area where the couch is and see what happens.

I am assuming that when you placed it, the couch did appear and looked fine.
The most likely reasons it vanished are:
* You were wearing the wrong group tag when you placed it, and auto-return sent it back to your Lost and Found folder or to the folder it came from in your inventory. This is highly likely.
* It's there, but hasn't rezzed yet due to lag. A common but temporary issue.
* You got hit by the glitch that is causing items to vanish from people's inventory. An unfortunate recent glitch in the SL asset management system.
In the first case, just locate it and put it back out again, while wearing the correct tag. This is usually a problem when you are on group-owned land or land that you are renting space on, and you were not wearing the tag for the group that controls parcel auto-return. Note that if MULTIPLE items were returned at the same time, they could appear in your lost and found as a single object, with the name of ANY of the items in that batch. It is best to try rezzing each object in your Lost and Found folder, in case this happened to you.
In the second case, try walking through the space the couch should occupy. If it's there but hasn't rezzed, yet, you should still bump into it, but this will not always be the case. Then try switching group tags. This will often cause things that haven't rezzed yet to appear. I have logged on and had wall prims in my home appear to be missing, and they remained missing until I changed group tags. My normal routine on log-in is to swap group tags, just to force past this glitch.
In the third case... Well, you can wait and hope that the Lindens can repair the inventory problem and restore the item. They are working on doing that for a small subset of missing inventory where a recent purchase that you have NOT yet rezzed in-world dissappears after you log off and back on again. But there are other cases, such as yours, where this is not the case, and the inventory still vanished. If you are certain that couch is nowhere in your inventory, file a bug report in-world for a missing asset.
If the Lindens don't help you, and none of the above helped, then ask the content creator for a replacement. Most will be OK with providing that.
If it vanished while you were moving it, you might have twitched the wrong way or entered the wrong value in Edit, and sent the couch out of sight. Look on the mini-map, and there are teal-colored areas marking every thing that you own. Of course, if you own the house and the couch is inside or above the house, you won't be able to tell the couch is there. But if it was slid off to one side, you could. (Such as if 'anyone can move' was selected, and someone slid it into their home, next door!)

Another scenario, though unlikely (and you'd see it turn up in your transaction history), is that you accidently left a price set on a no transfer item and someone bought it.

Another possibility is that it was "deleted" by the owner of the land or someone in the group who had rights to do so...this would result in the item being "purged" and wouldn't show up as a message for the owner of the item and the item would be lost, as opposed to ending up in the "Lost and Found" folder as if it were deleted by the owner.

I was going to hit on that.
I'm not accusing you of this, but it happens:
The other day, I was wandering around the different plots of land I have in a sim (I've got a nice mountaintop plot that I use and grabbed a few other plots for prims and to leave some nice open spaces in the sim, so it doesn't get covered completely) and found someone had build a nice little bungalow, complete with couches, a bookshelf and pool table, on my property. I tried to contact the person, but they weren't online, so I deleted it (after trying to return... for some reason, that didn't seem to want to work.)
Another instance, the same day, was on another sim that I have been asked to keep an eye on when I'm there... no building outside of the sandbox, no visible guns, no abusing people verbally, that sort of thing. Anyway, there was someone building a bloody great house outside of the sandbox. Not only that, it was right along the main path to get from one place to another! AND right next to the big sign with all the rules on it! I asked him to take it to the sandbox. "Whut?" was the response. I explained further and recieved a stream of bile, consisting of poorly spelled attacks on my mother, my sexual preference, what positions I enjoy said preference in and, strangely enough, the word n00b, which gave me a chuckle, as his register date was about a week ago. I asked him one more time, with a warning that it would be deleted, not returned, if he did not take it up. Needless to say, he didn't. DELETE. The string of profanities he put together, while almost illegible, was most impressive. Then the gun came out, more profanity while he tried to get it to work, this time more of a "railing against the world" type, rather than at me. When it got through that that option wasn't open, he decided the "Cover them with arrows" tack was the best option, along with more idiotic, inane profanity.
Ban'd.
Anyway, long story short (too late for that, I know), what they said.

If you placed a sofa out its safe to assume you placed other objects out- did you? If so the returned sofa may be in your inventory under the name of the other item which also got returned. Some new feature.
If they didnt get returned well.......youre one of the unlucky; several of my tenants have experienced this and as mentioned- only thing really to do is ask creator for a new one. Or, try doing a bug report on it. Ive had missing invetory items replaced to me upon sending in a bug report but took a few days.
Anyway, i have not been getting offline IMs telling me things have been returned to me when they have been; so if I were you id rez the first few items of your lost and found folder- theres a chance your couch is in there.
