Torley Linden:
Thread closed. Please read the sticky at the top of this forum — rants are inappropriate; this is a place to get help. It's more constructive to focus on sharing experiences and solving problems together.

There is a thread on this forum warning you that SL might not be compatible with Vista, so you did kinda choose to take a risk there...

battlefield 2142 doesn't use opengl for rendering like second life so they cannot be compared like-for-like.

ati has been slow to support opengl on vista and there are indications that the current drivers are below par (somebody has written a driver plugin to prevent certain issues according to a blog comment).

the reason an annual premium account works out $3.95 p/m cheaper than paying monthly is because you pay in advance. this deal would be unlikely if pro-rata refunds were offered upon cancellation.

the refunds policy is outlined in the terms and conditions you agreed to when joining.

with regards the premium account cancellation, linden lab would probably reinstate it if you gave them a call explaining the misunderstanding. good luck with that if you decide to stay. =)

1. Vista runs OpenGL on top of DirectX...this has the effect of a performance hit of about 50%.

2. ATI has been tepid about OpenGL support in thier graphics cards (serious problems a while ago with ATI cards not rendering SL very well about a year ago).

Well, have you heard of 3 strikes and you're out. Let's hope that something else doesn't break.

Where did you saw Vista was supported by SL? Just give me one URL where LL state Vista is officially supported.

Otherwise, shut the f*** up.

Were you referring to me? Now, why would I do that? I don't know this guy and I haven't told anyone to leave orientation island. Since he did a big mistake of buying a year subscription without reading the system requirements, I am just suggesting he get a new video card so he might be able to get into SL. Either that or downgrade to XP... or upgrade to Linux. :P

Just a side bar here, I run a 128ram radeon 300 ati card with 300 watt power supply, my partner has a 256 ram nvidia gforce 6200 with a 550 watt power supply, and other than my fan going nuts recently, I render faster and generally get around better than she. Now we aren't the most sophisticated or computer savy (not total slackers either, lol) of the sl crowd, so there may be settings that might improve rudy's experience , but so far I would say the radeon is working better here. Oh, its the same connection on both machines 10 mgbts/sec fiber optics giving roughly 3-4 mgbts after the split to each puter.

I wouldn't touch Vista right now with 10 foot pole, whether SL runs on it or not. I plan to give it at least a year for the early adopters to discover the kinks, and for software developers to get up to speed with it. Then, maybe I'll try it out if there's a compelling reason to do so. Otherwise, XP works just fine.

I also want to see how MS responds to people's frustrations with all Vista's DRM crap before I'll go near it. I'm all for supporting copyright, but an OS that locks you out of your own machine whenever it suspects something might not be legit, that's just all kinds of wrong. Copyright is a legal and social issue, not a technical issue. Whenever companies try to institute technical solutions for it, it always ends in disaster. If MS wants to protect their IP, they have every right to do so, but this is not the way. And they certainly shouldn't be the ones trying to play cops, judge, jury, & executioner over other people's IP. They're neither qualified nor competent to do that.

Anyway, Your, while I can sympathize with your plight, and I'm sorry to hear you're unhappy, understand that it's your own responsibility to check the system requirements before you try to install and run any piece of software. Nowhere in SL's sysreqs does it say Vista is supported. It quite clearly says you need Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 SP4, or any Mac OSX version from 10.3.9 on. You can't expect programs designed for XP to run on Vista any more than you could expect Windows 95 programs to run in XP, or DOS programs to run in Windows 95. Every brand new OS requires a waiting period before software developers are able to adapt to it. Some programs might work, and when they do, that's great, but you gotta understand that many will not.

My advice, backup all your data right now, then wipe your hard drive, start over again with XP, and then everything will work again, including SL. Put that Vista CD on a shelf for at least 6 months, and see what the world looks like at that point.

The only reason I'm getting Vista is because it was a free mail-in-rebate/upgrade sort of thing for one of my computers. Since it's my hubby's comp, he's refused it until he can see how his key programs run in it. In other words, let the others find the problems for us ;)

I wouldn't upgrade to Vista right now either. If I had a second machine, I would definitely consider it. Microsoft operating systems remind me of the First Look viewers. They are released and have nice new features, but they always have at least 1 thing wrong with them and need a patch. Unlike the First Look viewers, patches for operating systems don't usually come out every week; it takes more time so people can test the first version. I have been curious about Vista lately; does it allow you to make a program run as though it were on an older operating system? For example, a program like Yahoo Messenger. I can right click on the application file, select properties, go to the Compatibility tab, under the Compatibility Mode section I can check the box named Run This Program In Compatibility Mode For, and finally decide what mode I want it to run in. Examples: Windows 95, Windows 98/Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5), or Windows 2000. Is this still a feature in Windows Vista, and is it required to run Second Life on Vista? Also, I heard you must have certain drivers installed with ATI graphics cards to run Second Life in Vista. Here is a thread I found dealing with Vista and ATI cards. /111/ec/166104/1.html
If you decide to put windows XP on your machine, I hear college students have access to Microsoft operating systems in the libraries for as cheap as $10. ;)

I see the spelling and grammar checker in Vista doesn't seem to be working either ... :-)

C'mon, folks, give the guy a break. He obviously can't type worth a damn, and what he *meant* to say was:

I'm stupid.

He coudn't possibly be blaming Linden Labs because he installed a new OS for which few graphics drivers are available and which has all the inevitable problems of a new version. Who in their right mind would blame Linden for not supporting an OS which they clearly state they don't support.

Case closed.
