Is there a way to IM to a friend in SL when I am outside SL?
In other words, the laptop that I take on business trips cannot run SL.
It would be great to tell a certain someone that I miss her!

If you have messages sent to your email when you are not inworld to accept them, you'll have the necessary info to send her a message.

Have her IM you when you aren't inworld, then you can simply reply to the IM from your email.

And that is very sweet :)

You might want to try the program SLeek, assuming you are using a Windows based computer.

The website for SLeek is at http://delta.slinked.net/programming/sleek/ .

The url to download the program file is http://delta.slinked.net/files/SLeek/SLeek-0_1_8_alpha.zip .

SLeek requires .NET 2.0, available for free from Microsoft at .NET 2.0 .

There's a good chance you already have .NET installed if you do your Windows updates reasonably frequently.

I just sent Rhombic an IM using the SLeek program. Rhombic is not online and thus might get the IM in email. We shall see.

There is also a a scripted object that accepts email and reroutes it to the person of your choice. I don't recall the name of it offhand but it was mentioned just lately in these forums.

Yes, for L$23 you can get an Email-2-IM cube from Max Case, at Green 191 165. Then if you enter your friends names and key numbers into a note card in it, it will allow you to send emails to the cube, that then forwards them as IMs to the friend designated in your email "subject" line.

In fact once you have set this up any of your freinds can send email to that cube if you give them the email address and list of names you put into the cube. They can all email an IM to you via the cube also.

I've also created a similar device. It can route email to a specific person, or to multiple people at once. Or, if there are no notecards defined (default) it will route the email to the device owner.

It's free, IM me if anyone would like a copy.

Hi,

If you've IMed me for a copy, but haven't received the router yet, please IM me again (or leave your request here.) Sorry about that. I closed my SL window and no longer have those IMs.

Those last two items are for when you are already in world, you could just as easily send an IM then. The OP wants to IM from OUT of SL.

I saw a commercial for an above-ground pool. It was thirty seconds long. You know why? Because that's the maximum amount of time you can depict yourself having fun in an above-ground pool - M.H.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later. - M.H.

No, the last two items would allow you to email that device from RL, which will have a constant email address until it is derezzed, which would then forward on the email as an IM to the recipients.

The scripted objects accept email using llGetNextEmail, I would think. and send out IMs which will appear as IMs from objects usually do. I assume they would require that you have somewhere to keep your object inworld.

"I closed my SL window and no longer have those IMs." - dloes the newly acquired ability to log chat help with that problem?

Ah, I get it now... thanks for the clarification. Would you have to enter your email address into that box and email yourself, or do you email to a key and the script picks it up and sends it on?

(This is why I'm not a scripter! :D)

You email to <object-uuid@lsl.secondlife.com>. The object picks it up then resends as in-world IMs as SuezanneC described. And yes they would have to keep the object in-world. If the object is re-rezzed then the email address changes (technically it's a different object.)

The "inconvenient" part is the object needs to know the uuid / key of every person it needs to send IMs to. It can figure out the uuid of the object's owner easily enough, but for the rest of the people, the user needs to input those keys into a notecard. My version includes a sensor in the object to help out the user... Email-2-Im probably has something similar (or more clever, I should take a look.)
