What is this menu for?

Most times I login, or really all times, I go straight to the menu:
WORLD > FORCE SUN > NOON so I can see what is going on.

But before that, even though the PST or SLT (Second Life Time) is 3pm it is dark. I go to the menu and change to region default and it is still dark in day time, nearly always. I ALWAYS have to change it.

Can I set it to NOON as default somewhere?

You might have to turn up the brightness on your monitor? :)

Also, please note that the Second Life day is only four hours long, so don`t expect the in-world day/night cycle to match anywhere in the First Life world.:)

Although that would be a wonderful feature (hint, hint, Linden), you cannot set a default for your login, short of doing some tweaks to your client software which is NOT recommended.

Every login, it resets.

A faster way to Force Noon is Ctrl-shift-Y.

Myself, at login while the world is still rezzing, i run the following commands:
ctrl-shift-Y forces noon
ctrl-alt-6 turns off fog
ctrl-alt-shift-3 turns off trees
ctrl-alt-shift-9 i forget which is which on these last two... one turns off clouds,
ctrl alt shift - (dash) and the other turns off grass

Wow, with the exception of turning off grass, my login sequence is the same. I REALLY REALLY wish those could be set as defaults in preferences, I am never likely to want those particular settings any different.

I read somewhere that nights are shorter than days in SL. But I usually stick with the default light unless I'm building something. It does kind of add some atmosphere to everything and some builds I think were designed to be viewed at night.

May I ask why you think 4 hours are rediculus?

Anyway, I use the "force sunlight" menu often to change the lighting when I make pictures. Often I switch it midnight, because then I can the best effects in my photo-studio.

Days are 4 hours.

Nights are 1 hour.

To OP:

If you are having issues beyond that, I'd try clearing cashe, possibly reinstalling SL (sometimes teh constant updates cause problems. Always best to uninstall/reinstall on update days, imo), and then contact Technical Support if the problem of continuous nights persists.

I, myself, had this issue two days ago. It cleared up after logging for the day and comming back the next. (I always clear cashe when I log).

And to your question: No. There is no way to set NOON as default. Sorry.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

I love to set up sunrise and sunset pictures. I think the light at those time are the most flattering for avitars.

While I will change my settings to noon if I have a project that I need to see, or maybe when I am shopping, I prefer to let this sun rise and fall as SL intended. It just feels more natural and as Bree said some builds appear to be designed for night lighting. I have a nice wood fire on my property as well as some garden lights lighting the path to my dock, not nearly as effective during the daytime.

What's ridiculous about it? If they used a real world day/night cycle, we'd have to stare at dusks and dawns that each take an hour or more instead of just a few minutes, and the darkness you so despise would last 8 or 10 hours instead of just one. As nice as those red and purplish hues look at dusk and dawn, they do severely interfere with the ability to see native colors, making building & texturing at those times almost pointless. The last thing I think anyone would want would be to lose 2+ hours of productivity every day to those altered lighting conditions.

The cycle we've always had in SL is 3 hours light, one hour dark, and it works just fine. I have yet to see any video game or online world with a 24 hour day/night cycle. That's just not practical or desirable in a simulated on-screen environment.

Remember, most people don't spend a full day staring at a monitor. For the majority of people, even 4 hours is a long time to sit in front of the computer. It only makes sense that people should be able to experience the full range of the lighting cycle in a reasonable amount of time. Imagine someone who works 9-5, and logs into SL from maybe 6 to 7 every night. Should their entire experience of SL really be nothing but evening dusk? Or should they be able to experience the full spectrum? I think the answer is pretty obvious there.

Anyway, if you're having trouble seeing at night, turn up your night time brightness setting in your SL preferences. When you turn it all the way up, you'll find that night is just about as bright as day is, only the sky is black instead of blue. And as you yourself pointed out, it takes all of 1-2 seconds to override the cycle anyway. It's really not a big deal.

Days are 4 hours.

Nights are 1 hour.
As Chosen Few says in between, I thought that daylight was three hours and night one hour, for a four-hour total "day", in the calendar sense, not the "not night" sense. Gah, I hate how English has multiple incompatible meanings for certain words! "Day" means too many different things! Perhaps I should have been clearer in my original post?
