i live in Australia and i don't have a passport, iv'e never considered getting on because i don't plan on ever travelling outside Australia, now, one of the forms of identification that could be needed is a passport which costs $193 AU. Obviously i'll get one if i really have to but is there any other forms of identification i can use instead? we dont have ID numbers in Australia, i have a birth and marriage certificate, a medicare card and a proof of age card, would those things be enough or is the passport going to be needed too?

thankyou,

sky

Hey sky!

They need just one form of ID...like in your case a birth certificate. No need to buy a passport. :D

Since Linden Lab will not be the company verifying your age (it'll be done through Integrity Services), I seriously doubt they know the answer to your question. I'd suggest asking Integrity. My guess is that as an international provider of Age Verification services, they're aware of Austrialia's age verification measures and will have already taken them into account. However, the ONLY people who can answer your question are the people at Integrity. Anything else is mere speculation.

I've just had a thought (yes - it does happen)

Holding a passport doesn't necessarily mean you're an adult. Are they going to want to see the passport? Will they contact the issuing office to determine whether or not it was issued to an adult?

I suppose I should look this up on the Integrity website but [yawn] can't really be bothered. Just thought I'd toss another ingredient into the seething cauldron that is the Age Verification debate.

In a 2 minute service? Highly doubtful.

They probably just match data from multiple sources, erring on one side or the other. You won't be able to just give a passport number, they'll want more information to check.

Phillips' program asks viewers for their name and address along with their birth date, he said.

Aristotle checks that information against a government database to verify it. For more rigorous checks, viewers give part or all of a driver's license number, which is checked. Sometimes Aristotle employees call a home telephone number to verify the information.

If the information doesn't add up, Aristotle informs their client company, which can choose to block the viewer from their Web site, Philips said.
My favourite sentence in the article (Philips is one of the CEOs):

None of the methods are foolproof, Phillips said. But they cut down on improper Internet viewing.

If Integrity/Aristotle are claiming to be able to verify an Australian's adulthood via their passport number then that is just plain false.

First, because they cannot access any sort of list of passport holders, let alone find out which passport number belongs to which person. That information is kept in the strictest confidence and its a criminal offence here to disclose it.

Secondly, because children get their own passports in Australia, I know because I had one. Holding an Australian passport proves even less about your age than holding a credit card.
