Voice griefing?

Already we've had a$$clowns comming into clubs I help run security for and causing "griefing" or "harrassment" over the voice channel. While patrons can mute individually (which is spereate from teh SL mute because the voice is a seperate system), the overall effect is "bad".

In this specific case, we had several persons come in with voice on harrassing various patrons as well as being ehavy on racial slurs. When they do this in Chat or IM's there is a text log and they can be ARed and turned over to LL.

Voice, apparently, gives them freedom to grief/harrass with no way to AR them for it.

Our current solution is to turn of Voice comepletely. Does anyone have a better solution?

Or is there a way to only allow Voice to be used by the Group the land is deeded to? If not, is this possible to be implemented, or beyond technical possibilites?

As a side note: What idiot at LL thought it was a good idea to have Voice off on a sim by default but ON on individual parcels by default? Some of us don't want this new interface (so can't turn it off without DLing a feature that is poorly designed). Just leave it off until we turn it on ffs.

I will thank Support for turning off Voice on my parcel on request through a Support Ticket. Handled within a few hours. So there is a means for us to get it off, though I bet Support gets fed up with such requests fairly quickly *snickers*

wow, yeah, good question. I'd love to know the answer to that myself. Is it possible to just mute one person in voice?

If you ban the assclowns, then you can't hear them.

I think this kind of thing could threaten to make voice virtually unusable except on very tightly controlled parcels and sims. In an open, publiic setting it only takes a few jerks to ruin the experience for everyone, and it seems like the jerks are much harder to track down on voice than on type-chat or IM.

Voice was banned{made unavalible} from the sim I frequent while still in beta. Yup, verbal griefing.

Good question. You can initiate a group chat in voice, kinda like a group IM.
I have to ask though. How do you handle any of other audible griefing? You know the whoos and the growls and the meow mix song or banana phone or any of the other endless crap that existed long before voice. I’ve actually noticed an increase in the audible non-voice griefing lately, and worry that some people may think that what they hear is coming through voice but really just an audio clip.

Not really, not yet. So, for public venues? Voice off. Which, by the way, shouldn't restrict any 1:1 or conference voicechats that anyone might want to set up.

You might consider setting up a small 'voice area' off to one side for folks who haven't the experience with voice to set up 1:1/etc. linkups... but, in general, IME voice-off seems to be the best approach for high-traffic social areas.

Good luck!

There was a mention of a fee of some sort for groups to have their own voice chat 'channel'.

Ah, from the FAQ at https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice_FAQ

From: someone
Formal SL Groups will be asked to pay a L$10 annual group fee (non-refundable) for Groups. This L$10 fee will be waived for the first 60 days after the main voice launch, which will take place in the first week of August 2007.

So, this means that groups can have a 'voice channel' I guess. I don't know if you can restrict the parcel to have just the group voice though. *sighs* From what I was reading of the FAQ, that isn't covered. You may want to submit a support ticket and see what they say on it.

oh yay...

From: someone
Island Owners will have voice for their land at no cost until the end of the 2007 calendar year.
After this, Island Owners will be asked to pay a monthly fee for voice if they are not already at new pricing that includes voice.

pay extra for voice
new island owners then will pay manditory for voice even if not

This was one of the reasons some suggested voice should be availible to premium accounts only.

So LL is going to make island owners pay for a service that they don't even want and that LL has completely and utterly screwed up on the implementation of?

If yes to the the above, one more question: Is Philip F-ing retarded?

btw, thanks for all the ideas and pointers to information. Looks like turning it off is best. Too bad the system is so screwed that IT KEEPS TURNING ITSELF BACK ON!!!

Someone shoot that Grid Monkey. It's sick. Put it out of our misery before it infests the rest.

*crossing fingers that Sunday's "fix" actually fixes something*

Think its bad now? Just wait till they figure out the full URL's and such of the voice servers. I remember when Yahoo chat added voice and its been hell ever since.

one way to handle it is to limit voice to those on your friends list. i dont know if You can limit it to groups only though. would be a nice feature. but i can't ge tmine to work for any length of time so....

A close friend of mine on SL used to use Yahoo chat. She said it pretty much destroyed any fun she had when voice was implemented. She's so out of it, that she believes SL will be destroyed because of Voice chat.

Seeing as how greifers have already found this to be a viable source of ammunition, she may not be too far off.

You know that's a really good point; how do you record voice chat history in order to AR a griefer? I hadn't thought of that before...
