I would like to simply post a message of appreciation to the folks who are behind Second Life and this incredible experiment.
Nothing like it has ever been done before. There is no other "game" or global virtual experience like it. Second Life is the closest thing we have so far to what William Gibson coined "cyberspace"....where people "jack in".
We all have our share of problems and frustrations in this new world...but I doubt any of us who really "get it" find them unsurmountable and they are certainly worth the effort to overcome them.
I am fascinated and at the same time disturbed about griefing, landbots, restrictions, bad neighbors, missing inventory, trouble contacting support...etc...and the reason I'm fascinated and disturbed is because all of these experiences are based on a virtual existence. A Second Life, though with very real first life emotional responses and real money and time investments. Fascinating because it is a neural novelty; disturbed because it is so real, people can be emotionally affected even after logging out.
Linden Labs has created a place for us to explore ourselves...but it's the wild west, no one has before ventured into this experimental realm of providing a virtual reality which so closely replicates our "real" world, it's foibles, joys, dreams and realizations at this level. Linden Labs is learning as they go and grow with each of us. I am grateful to participate in this most remarkable endeavor.
In spite of the problems, I would like to remind and encourage everyone to show some appreciation for the folks who are responsible for Second Life, bad and good...Linden Labs is as much into it as we are...and we all want to do the right thing...we all want this to be a sustainable and lasting success.
Let's work with Linden Labs in a positive way for a fantastic future of the world we love to inhabit. Let's have some faith that in the long term things are going to be continually better.
[ The above doesn't exempt me from the privilege to voice my opinion about problematic issues related to SL. =) ]
Cheers, Infrared Wind

Very well put, Infrared.
To have the experience with all its evolutionary flaws is way better than having no experience at all.
It is AWESOME.

Sigh I agree and if they fix the "Second Life can't be accessed from this computer" problem I'm having, I'll be back exploring, building, chatting and dancing as soon as I can.
I knew I was really enjoying Second Life but I didn't realize how much until I couldn't get on!
It is a remarkable experience but the lack of customer support is taking its toll. I hope people remember the good stuff and ride this time out and I hope SL can manage to reach a functional plateau. Here's hoping the next upgrade is a winner!

I agree! LL dreserve credit for creating this wonderful space and system for us to inhabit. It might creak a bit at the joints sometimes but I'm just looking forward to the experience becoming even better.

A lot of the complaints I hear about SL and LL seem like the complaints I hear about cell phones. People complain that they can't make a call from a certain area and don't seem to appreciate that it wasn't too long ago when they could not have made a call at all without having to find and pump money into a pay phone.
I get frustrated too on those days when teleports fail more often than they work or it takes 45 minutes just to change clothes. But for something that didn't exist at all not that long ago, I have a lot more praise and appreciation than complaint.
Granted, sometimes I agree LL needs to get its act together on some issue or other, but for the most part, I don't get why people take every bad day as proof that the place is run by incompetents, or every policy change as the "beginning of the end of SL."
I hate SL some days, but only because I love it.

For now, it's a real pain to get when you try to contact LL customer support. From: Dnali Anabuki Sigh I agree and if they fix the "Second Life can't be accessed from this computer" problem I'm having, I'll be back exploring, building, chatting and dancing as soon as I can.

Where is everyone?
04-17-2007 09:57
I remember back when I thought 14,000 people was a LOT to be logging in at one time... now when it's down to 25k like it was yesterday, I feel like SL is a dern ghost town... tumbleweeds blowing down mainstreet and all. Did everyone quit without telling me? Or was it just tax time in the US?

I agree with the OP, even with it's faults SL is giving me enjoyment way beyond what I had imagined.

Big Storm?
Oh yeah, East Coast! Doh... Wind! Snow! Rain! We out here in the sunny West keep forgetting about that. I'm sure that you'll be laughing in July when we hit 115 degrees though!

Only if you're not indoors, in air conditioning, logged on to SL. Agree in spades with OP. Numerous flaws and all, this is the leading example of the next Really Big Thing, and it is a privilege to be part of it.

Cheers, Infrared Wind Wow what a positive post in a sea of discontent. Now just imagine if you got to experience SL 2 or 3 years ago when customer service was great and the grid functioned excellent as compared to now. You could even fly planes and cross sim boundaries easily. I don't even recall ever losing any of my inventory back then either. These issues have snowballed since they opened the open registration flood gates last year and honestly do not show any signs of improvement. I can see how new people can come into SL and be awed by it even in its current state of dysfunction. But trust me on this, things were better than this and show no signs of returning to a better state. You said "Let's have some faith that in the long term things are going to be continually better. ", this has not been their track record for awhile now i'm sorry to say, but I continue to hope things will get better myself otherwise I wouldn't still log in. I hope the day comes I can praise LL and SL again like I use to do a couple years ago.
