A character can do almost anything. Get a job, get married, have sex. it is virtually limitless.

Trust me, You will find out.

SL is Limited Only by your Imagination so some people find it an extraordinarily Rich and Varied environment, Others don't.
You will find it's a Fairly steep learning Curve at first. Mastering the Tools to make your Visions happen takes a Little time, and Practice, but there are lots of people, and Places that will help you Learn.
Looking forward to seeing you Inside.

Angel.

First off: Welcome!

Expect the unexpected, the expected, the exciting, the boring, the lewd, the kind, the brazen, the shy, the...... well, just like RL (real life), expect anything, everything, and nothing.

Yes you can get married (partnering), get a job (self employed or otherwise, majority self employed), own land, have pets, meet interesting people, meet people who have (politely) problems, and anyone in between. Yes you can have virtual sex. Once you start exploring, just look up anything you like in the search function and you'll probably find it there.

If you find someone friendly in the welcome area that's willing to give you some pointers, hang around and learn a thing or two. Or visit the Shelter and New Citizens Inc. Look for freebies and get ready to really have to clean your inventory. If you can, please avoid camping for extra $L, it's a drain on the system for everyone. Search groups for like minded people and join those which look interesting.

Look me up in game and I'll be happy to give you a half hour quickie tutorial on what little I know about the game so far.

Do not expect it to be like any other game you've ever played, however. It's not. It's unique in that there are no points, no end game, no person to play against, nothing to have as a goal. You make your own goal, just like RL. That's the whole point of it being a SL, to pick your own goal, make your av your ideal, make your home your ideal, and to make your SL your ideal. Do what makes you happy in game and you'll become addicted.

Time to dig up the old Bell & Howell filmstrip projector. I have an old filmstrip (EB Films, copyright 1955) that could clear up the mystery of sex in SL.

Frame 1. "EB Films presents"

(tone)

Frame 2. "Cautionary Tales, Part IV"

(tone)

Frame 3. "The Dangers of WooHoo"

(tone)

Frame 4. Two typical 50's era teenagers, one male, the other female are standing in the SL Welcome Area, in front of a 50's era "Lucky Strike" billboard.

(Male Narrarator) "Meet Tommy and Tammy Theremin, typical SL teens. Brother and sister, and inseperable. So innocent...so helpful."

(tone)

Frame 5. Tommy: I don't know why the kids at school keep talking about going behind these billboards. There's nothing back there but used underwear and sticky party balloons.

(tone)

Frame 6. Tammy: Oh my gosh, what is that? (Tammy points at an object that is neatly hidden behind a black bar). I think its an animal, but its gross. It has one eye! Ewwww!

(tone)

Frame 7. Tommy: Maybe its still alive. I'll poke it with a stick. (poke)

(tone)

Frame 8. One Eyed Creature: "Tommy Theremin makes me stiff!"

(tone)

Frame 9. Tammy: It said your name. I think it likes being stiff. Poke it again. (Tommy pokes Creature again)

(tone)

Frame 10. Creature: "Tommy Theremin, I like blowjobs!"

(tone)

Frame 11. Tammy: Well, that explains the balloons. Put one on the creature. I think it likes blowing up the balloons.

Tommy: Those balloons are gross. Gotta pick it up with a hankie. (Tommy picks up balloon and places it on the Creature.

(tone)

Frame 12. (Butch, the local SL ruffian appears on the scene)
Butch: Thereman, what's a homo like you doing back here? Only real men.., (sees Tammy) ...Gross! With your sister!

(tone)

Frame 13. Tammy: What are you talking about, you... ruffian!
Butch: Tammy, obtuse as usual... (sees creature in "party balloon. Tommy pokes it with a stick)

(tone)

Frame 14. Creature (muffled) "Tommy Theremin makes me cum!"

(tone)

Frame 15. Butch: Hey, back off! That's mine! I've been looking all over for it! Stop poking it with a stick, homo! You are makin' it sound like its gay for you!

(tone)

Frame 16. Tammy: Butch, what is it? Is it alive? Can I touch it?
Butch: Answers in order: A penis, yes and yes! But first, you have to play the game correctly. Let me put it on first.

(tone)

Frame 17. (Butch is now wearing the Creature. It hangs from his groin, but since the filmstrip was made in 1955, a tasteful black bar covers the exact attach point of the Creature.)

Butch: The object of the game is that you (pointing at Tammy) have to make the Creature pass out. You do that by smothering it. It can only be smothered by three means. Let me demonstrate...

(tone)

Frame 18 (Close up of Tommy's eyes (background music: Also sprach Zarathustra. Yes, they used this piece way before Kubrick)

(tone)

Frame 19. Male Voiceover Actor: Tommy and Tammy learned about the icky truth about sex in SL. Tommy chose to lead a celibate life after seeing what he saw. Tammy, on the other hand, would go on to do further "research" involving the strange new creature that Butch calls "Dick". Years later, God struck down Tammy for being a Filthy Whore.

(tone)

(The following words appear on screen. Voiceover Actor reads them)

Voiceover Actor: Remember:

Sex is bad
Don't touch the creature
Drink milk
Keep your hoo-hah covered at all times

(dramatic music plays)

(tone)

THE END

Well,it is all nice and good, but it looks like I am not able to play because the software doesn't support my Radeon 7000 or something.
I keep crashing no matter what I do
Would be nice if it would work with lower than Radeon 8500

Hi Avguste, SL just barely ran with my 7500 but enough to 'hook' me. Upgrading to a 9550 and increasing my RAM to 1Gb has enabled me to enjoy SL immensely.

Teeny, we had the 16mm film version of that but the B&H stalled one day and burned it .. Jeez that celluloid goes up ;)

Avguste, so much more to SL. Abba touched on some of it. Expect vampires, dragons, Imperial stormtroopers, Bugs Bunny ..... heck! even met another hobbit the other day!

I play in SL, but I don't consider it a game. It's more like a new place, a location where playing is a lot easier than in RL because you can suspend so many laws of physics.

But other than a mildly schizophrenic identification with my avatars, I'm just me walking around in SL. Albeit, better looking and with a MUCH nicer wardrobe.

I'd think SL repeats the experiences I made on IRC already. You meet people, as in real life, but not really as in real life. You're looking at things in an distorting mirror. The extremes get extremer, the normal things fade a bit. IF you're open and explorative (err is that a proper english word?) SL can be tons of fun.
Even when you're not one of the creators and shapers of the world (as in: You don't start building things or scripting). Be there. meet people. Look around, build, script or simply play.

I have a Radeon x300 and it runs fine. Can't get any lower end than that.

You might want to ask in the tech support forum about your constant crashing.

Be sure to give details (processor, ram, vram, which graphics board, how you are connecting.... seems silly but i know several folks who use a modem) ...all that nice stuff that the techies need to know)

crashing is a bummer

have you tried updating your graphics card drivers? this can make all the difference at times.

also, if you go into your Preferrences, you could try lowering anything related to graphics to a lower detail. including draw distance.. which in and of itself can be limiting if it's set higher.

also, what type of internet connection are you using? dial-up generally isn't worth even tring, DSL will get you by, cable is the most common (i presume) and fairly smooth (at least from the users end) and anything faster than that.. well, i'd be jealous. ;)

and as bilbo mentioned, having a nice chunk of RAM helps a bunch as well.
