If i can get around the firewall on my work PC it would be handy to be able to drop into SL occasionally during the day but my question is: how secure/insecure will anything be that i type into SL in the way of chat and IMs? In other words could my workplace actually retrieve my conversations in SL that were done thru their server? I'm certain they don't have anything like a keyboard 'snooper' program to monitor our every action so this query just relates to the use of the workplace server. Hope i dont sound too paranoid!

Any employee in my company who installed a major software application -- for personal use -- on a company computer would face a severe reprimand.
Any employee who installed an application as buggy and resource-intensive as SL into a company computer would probably be fired.
SL puts an extreme strain not just on the computer itself, but also on the internet connection. In addition to robbing the company of your time (it flies quickly when you're in SL, so don't kid yourself that you'll just check in for a moment), you're using expensive company resources and jeopardizing your computer's system integrity.

you won't be able to bypass the firewall without being the sysadmin of your company and if you ask here, you probably aren't.
You are paid for providing a work dude, not for fooling around in SL, keep that for home.

If it's your business fine, but otherwise, DO YOUR JOB! Out in the factory we work our butts off at times remakeing product for customers that's been entered wrong or lost in the system, struggling to bodgey stuff to keep machines because parts haven't arrived due to being ordered late to save the budget or not being able to buy bolts because we haven't paid a $200 bill from 4 months ago, then we see/hear of people in order entry, purchasing & accounts are playing solitare and watching stuff on Ebay in work time. And then whinge the A/C is 3 degrees too cold on their side of the room while we work in temperatures from 5-45 degrees Celcius. Some people have no idea how frustrating it can be with 12 guys and 2 cutomers trucks standing around doing nothing waiting for you to retap Imperial nuts to Metric to complete repairs on a machine because the Metric nuts tray has been empty for 3 weeks after ordering a more 6 weeks ago.

I have the luck that I am often on the road for my work and that have to take my driving breaks. So they don't mind I use my laptop to browse some forums in that time. But anything beyound that is not allowed. When I am at the office (I have there an desktop in my office as well), it wouldn't come up in me to go browsing forums like this one. I am there to do my work. Peter, the systemadministrator of the company I work for, showed me once that they can track exactly what you have done on the Internet. Which program accessed the Internet, which site you visited. So be warned Morwen.

I play SL during lunch breaks or anoying slow days or when I just cant be bothered to work, make sure that you are not logging any chat or IM and you shouldnt have a problem with employers retreiving conversation. I would also advise keeping your acitivities PG as well in the event you are caught it could be allot worse if you are in the middle of something 'questionable' I use a little firewall client that our IT support guy gave me to get around the firewall which blocks the relevant ports etc. The only issue with this firewall client is that it allways disconects my VPN. Also it may not work on all firewalls, not really sure to be honest.

Firewall clients as you mentioned, don't lead you "around" the firewall, it gives you access "through" it.... which means all activities will be logged. I use one myself, I need one to get access to company website to upload files when needed. Morwen.

Morwen. Yeah this would be very dodgy if you have a system admin. I work for a very large company based in Asia and there are about 8 of us who work out of an office in the UK so there technically isnt anybody to monitor our interent activity. We blunder through technical issues on our own or call an our outsourced IT support when things start blowing up so I am probably not in the best example of a proper working environment as we are pretty much unregulated.
