As you are premium now, it would make more financial sense to use your free 512 tier. You can use the land search (which I believe isn't working at this moment according to the blog) and look around for 512 plots you like the look of. Do take your time and research where you would like to live, some places are definately more attractive than others.
You could contact a land baron like Sarah Nerd to see if they have nice plots for sale, would cut out a lot of searching.
When you find a nice piece at the right price, right click and chose buy.

No free land when you start you can own up to 512m without paying more per month You need to shop around and see what you can find in search landsales

Make sure you only search *mainland* listings when doing a land search. Land *not* on the mainland is *not* on simulators managed by Linden Lab and the tier will *not* be covered by your premium account. As Tegg said, you can buy a 512m2 parcel (on the mainland) and the tier on that is covered by your premium account. Buy something larger than 512m2 and you'll have to pay a bigger monthly fee. *mainland*, *mainland*, *mainland*. I can't emphasise it enough. I've seen too many newcomers make mistakes.

How do you know what the mainland is? I see three huge pieces of land? How do you know what is LInden owned or not. Bought land not Linden, but still mixed up by looking at map what is considered the "mainland"? Even though I bought land, I guess from an estate, I still feel like I don't own since I can't change ocean or sky setting w/o "them" doing it. (I know have to own island to change sky). I did learn fortunately difference with being able to sell my land vs. them really still owning by not being able to. NOne of this is really clear to us newbies (30days old) & you can really get ripped off. Also is there away to see the world & locations while out of world-so you could see locations especially new regions coming up? How do you know which server you are on-heard 5 good??? Sorry alot of questions for being new!

there are land classes given most everyday. I strongly recommend attending a few of them before purchasing any land. Its something that you need to be aware of before getting land. There's many things involved with buying land. Learn all you can before the purchase

"Mainland" is any of the big continents that you see on the map. These are made up of land that was originally designed and owned by Linden Lab. Any of the little islands floating on the map are owned by individuals and they are responsible for paying Linden Lab to maintain the island, so you would be renting land from them. Just for reference, 1 island = 1 "sim" = 1 "region". Some people own many islands so it may look like one big island on the map. On the mainland (any of the huge continents) land is broken up into "regions" or "sims" as well; each region has its own unique name.
