Does it strike anyone else but me as astoundingly bad that SL can't determine when its own cache is invalid? Cache coherency is not cutting edge technology, but when there are so many problems that are fixed by clearing the cache that SL needs a special button for it, wouldn't it make more sense to fix the underlying problem than have it cause so much support troubles? You may say I'm a dreamer...

Astounding, yes. Suprising, no.

If they had a cache that cleared itself when corrupted, what would the Help Request folks tell people?

Why do you think clearing the cache works? Telling me "I cleared it and it now works" isn't good enough. Perhaps running it a second time is what fixed it.
Software myths are easy to propagate. Is this one? I have no idea, but I do know that I have never, ever, cleared my cache.

Wake I dont know if it is still true as I am just returning from 3 months away but long ago the cache folder had a tendency to get ENOURMOUS. I cleared mine regularly in the interests of disk space.

They've since discovered that really big caches tend to cause problems. Earlier First Look clients let you make them much bigger (unlimited?) but stability tanked so they dropped it back down..

On occasion I've had to clear my Windows temp folder, which is the equivalent of the SL cache.
Most people won't need to, but as a web designer I was constantly downloading various graphics with a right-click or viewing the source file to study HTML structure. One day, the right-click stopped working and it drove me insane with frustration until I Googled the problem. IE glitch and the only way to restore normalcy was to clear the Temp folder.
Same thing happens with .Net development. Every once awhile, at random, my whole project borks when .Net loses track of .dlls and I have to clear the temp folder and do an IIS reset. Then everything runs fine again.

From: Gaybot Foxley If they had a cache that cleared itself when corrupted, what would the Help Request folks tell people? Well the new line seems to be "go to the blog", even when the blog entry has absolutely no relevance to the problem one is seeking help with. I think the clear the cache ting has become such a bad joke they finally abandoned it. :\
