How do I sell a skin?

Hi all.

I made a male skin, spend quite a lot of time on it. In fact, I spend more time on that skin than SL itself. My question is:

1. How do I put that skin up for sale? It's a texture right now, how do I make it a "click to wear" object?
2. Anything I should be aware of regarding the permissions (no transfer/no copy)?

Thank you very much for your help.

Edit your appearance and click on the "Make Outfit" button. Then select ONLY the skin, name it with the title that you want and Save it.

That will create a skin object in your Inventory (usually Body Parts).

Right-click and select Properties to set the permissions you want. The most common for a skin would be Copy, No Mod, No Transfer. This allows residents to save a skin with a favorite outfit and protects you from theft.

Then drop the skin object in a vendor of some sort and set a price.

Voila -- you are a skin designer!

PS -- Make sure your name appears in the Creator slot. If you worked from an existing modifiable skin to create your own, it may not have your name on it. You'll want to start with a clean skin option, load the texture, then save.

Two questions:

Why do I need a vendor?

How do I sell the skin through a poster?

The vendor is where the skin will be on display. It will distribute them and collect the money. This way your skins will be in a position to be sold 24/7, whether you are online or not.

Okay, I'll give this a shot too.

You don't need a vendor to sell outside of SL, such as on SL Boutique or SL Exchange, but you will need a spot of land somewhere to store your server.

Unless you want to stand on a street corner and shout "Skins for sale" 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you will need a mechanism of some kind to make sales inworld. That mechanism can be a commercial vendor system or a simple poster/box dispenser.

To use the poster method, create a descriptive graphic (usually with a photo of the product) in the graphics program of your choice. Save the image as a targa file and then upload it when you're in SL (cost L$10).

Create a prim and shape it as need (squarish for a box, thin for a poster). Provide an appropriate title ("Sun-bright Skin";) and description ("Male skin with beard and rippling muscles";). Drop your skin object into the Contents tab of the prim. Then set the prim for Sale, with the option for "Sell contents" and include your price.

Finally, set the Left-click menu to "Buy" object.

Now, when someone hovers over the object they'll see the title, description and price and when they click they'll be given an opportunity to buy.

Bear in mind that I'm not in-world right now, so I may have blurred one or two details. But that's the gist of it.

Most skins are sold off of boxes vendors cause lag and are not needed if your only selling a few objects. I still use no vendors unless its someone elses items I am selling on commission or something as filler

dont buy a vendor if you dont have to especially if you have the space. Just make a box for your skin slap a photo on it set it to buy contents in the edit menu and put a price on it

Also you might want to make your skin copy no transfer since stuff gets lost in this game from asset server issues no copy items are not popular right now especially if they cost a lot.

Also you will find that a lot of buyers hate vendors as well because you have to sit there as each new picture rezzes however with the boxes with photos they just rez once and its all there and you can browse without flipping through vendors. Its also good for comparison if you are selling skins in multiple colours people can see the colour differences much easier

so no you dont NEED a vendor most clothing stores, skin stores and hair stores if you go into them you wont see vendors you will see boxes on walls that you buy from no scripts involved no vendors just boxes and boxes and boxes

Also make sure to fill in the radio button to contents if you choose buy the object change the next set of radio buttons from original to copy or you will end up selling the box on the wall :)

Edit your appearance and click on the "Make Outfit" button.
It's always better to create the skin body part directly inside your inventory using the drop down menu there. If you create the skin (body part) inside the appearance dialogue your name will be left out as the creator and replaced with "Nobody". Not a great name to have for an item you intend to sell, especially on a skin that may have taken many many hours to create. All the other suggestions are spot on :)

Thanks, Namssor! I've only created an orginal body shape once for my store line, since I just copied it from that point on. Looks like I forgot the process.

Thank you all, you made a lot of things clear to me. What a friendly community this is by the way, compared to a lot of other forums around.

Great weekend!
