I'm trying to get my FRAPS program to work for recording audio and video. TIA.

I think the in-game sound effects are WAV files.

(not to be confused with the streamed in music from outside of SL)

Fraps will record video and sound together, or either seperately.

If you are using video and sound together, use QuickTime mov format and set the sound to 44,000hz at either 32-128 bite rate depending on the quality of sound you want (note: the higher the bit rate, the slower the delivery, 32 is ok for mono or 'general sound', 128 is near CD quality). As the finished video format will be fully encapsulated, you don't need to worry about codex as QuickTime will handle that.

If you wish to use sound on its own, use a mp3 format for general streaming of music, or wav format for sound bytes (max 10 seconds).

You upload sounds as .WAV files, but they are compressed with OggVorbis by the client before they are uploaded. You can choose the bit rate of the compressed file in Edit/Preferences/Audio and Video. Direct uploading of .OGG files without recompression is a feature that has been requested, but it's not yet available in the Second Life client.

Streaming music is compressed with either MP3 or OggVorbis. I'd like to see AAC added, but I doubt it's a high development priority for LL.
