I saw a link to the Develop page at secondlife.com here in the forums just lately, took a look, and it seems pretty nice to me.

I think it's going to replace the Content creation forums when all of this is going down.

Meh. Marketing aimed at pro game designers that probably never considered doing anything in SL, and who would likely laugh at the micropayments that are standard for in-world goods.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I think they have the spirit but are lost as to how to do the job of getting the message out.
This is a repeating theme. LL needs to have a big banner (even though I despise such methods) in the office that says: "Eat Your Own Dog Food" Until LL begins actually using SL for their daily work and feels the pain they will never achieve what it could become. For instance their RESI team should have to develop the tools in world to do their job in world and then stay in world all damned day doing their job. This can be done. And when done LL will be able to be honest about SL being a business solution because it is the solution they use. |

That's the entire point. If LL was forced to use what they sell they would be getting off ass and making it better. And replacing their entire dev staff if necessary to do it.
At Microsoft you have to use the alpha/beta software Microsoft is developing. No choice. So if the new version of outlook is fucked up the entire company is screaming about it. Also why when a Microsoft team ships a product they have a seriously bent "release" party. Stay away from the windows. Chairs coming through. If you are not using what software you write yourself then it will never be great software. |

Yeah, trust the cooks when you see them eating their meals. Doesn't always work but it's a kind of guarantee.

This quote from the page "Why Develop in Second Life?" has some incredible numbers for populations in virtual worlds.
"A recent report from market research firm Strategy Analytics predicts that the adult social virtual world population will grow from 11.5 billion in 2009 to 32.5 billion in 2015." That's way more than the number of computers in the world so it's a very...very...bold claim. Strategy Analytics web site actually reports millions, not billions. |

Meh. Marketing aimed at pro game designers that probably never considered doing anything in SL, and who would likely laugh at the micropayments that are standard for in-world goods. You reckon? I'm trained in all aspects of video game art and I'm glad to have an outlet for my skills that I actually have any interest in. The games industry in my country is... not very inspiring at the moment. ^^; Seeing my stuff in-world and having use, DOES inspire me and pushes me to improve. And I know there are more game artists that are far better than me ;o; and have established themselves quite nicely (see: Blue Galaxy, DERP. avatars). |
