Problem with the sky only on one parcel

I've got a little problem, and I don't know whats causing it or how to fix it. A few days ago, my partner added another parcel to the property that he rents. It's not deeded as one lot though. Well, I've been there almost exclusively, except for shopping trips, for several days now, as I've been doing the decorating and landscaping.

A couple of days ago, I can't pinpoint exactly when, the sky started looking weird. It's like its covered with a smog laden haze, with a thin line of light on the horizon, on all settings except midnight which is just total blackness, no stars even. Also, occasionally I've been seeing flashes of light in the sky that looks like distant lightning.

At first I chalked it up to SL being its normal buggy self, but then I started to worry that my graphics card was going. So I asked my partner if he was seeing those flashing lights... the first night he said no, the next day he did notice it, and then today he said it looked fine, but it was still messed up for me. So I decided to do some experiments.

I went to several other sims, the sky was perfectly fine. So then I thought it was our sim with the problem. I tped back home to my own parcel, it was fine. I tped to my prim land which borders his new parcel, it was fine. I walked over to the new parcel and within seconds, the sky went buggy.

If I walk off the property, all the skies stay messed up on my screen, but if I tp to another parcel on the sim, it clears right up in a couple seconds. I went through this routine several times with the same results. I even tried logging out and clearing my cache and it was still doing it when I logged back in. Something else that seems to tie into this is an oddity with my mini-map. When I get on this parcel and the sky weirds out, my mini-map also goes blank to only gray, with turquioise spots and green dots, but without the terrain graphics.

The only thing that I have not tried yet is tping to this parcel because my partner set it to "no landmarks" before I could make one. I'll try that when he gets in game tomorrow.

I took a couple of screenshots to kinda show what I'm talking about. Has anyone heard of this happening before or know of any way to fix it?

SL Global Warming. should have cut down on the particle emissions when you had the chance.

Angel makes me giggle! :p

On the serious side, wow, this is a new one to me!

One thing you mentioned that sounds familiar to me is the mini-map thing. The mini-map going gray is what I see when someone rezzes a mega-prim in the vicinity.

Maybe what you're seeing could be achieved by you being inside a hollow mega-prim that has a semi-transparent texture on the inside? That would only make sense if others in the same location saw it the same time you do.

If you can't locate the problem and would like help, please IM me with the location. I'll stop by and take a look to see if I can find anything weird.

Oh, and just to cover the bases: clear cache, re-log, rinse and repeat. Reinstall the client. Do a clean reinstall (meaning getting rid of the SL "app support folder", but save your chat logs separately if you keep those). If you haven't tried the update, try that. If you ARE on the update, try returning to the non-updated version (1.17.0).

Keep us posted. It sounds like a very strange bug indeed!

UPDATE: I met inworld with Dementia. It is in fact a gigantic mega-prim -- 65536x65536x0.1. I don't even want to thing how many regions that's covering! I've IMed the owner and will also try to get a Linden in world to remove it.

Many, many thanks to you Ava. Ava talked to the owner and explained what his prim was doing and he promptly removed it. My sky is beautiful again ... good job :)

Megaprims

My first thought when I read the original post was a megaprim, too.

A friend of mine once "lost" a megaprim in the ocean around our island. I came in one day and noticed that the water was looking odd - but only in my own neighborhood. The water in other areas of SL looked fine. It wasn't until he happened to mention to me that he had been playing with his new toy and had "lost" one that I figured out what was going on. I deleted it and voila! everything was fine again.

BTW: his lost megaprim covered something like 9 square-sims worth of ocean!

Yay! Glad to hear everything is all better now. :D

Oberon points out something that is good to know. A lot of the time with the truly giant mega-prims, the person who rezzed it does not know it's there. From their point of view, it just looks like it never rezzed. (People more familiar with them can tell by looking at the mini-map, but then again, people more familiar with them don't tend to try rezzing one large enough to cover the entire grid!)

So when you see one of these, it's good to contact the owner with a friendly tone to start, because it's likely they don't know what they've done. That's exactly what happened here, and with my instructions the owner gladly removed the monster. I'm glad Dementia had the sense to pull me back from my "AR the b***tard" stance. :o

An interesting thing about this particular giant mega-prim (one of the ones from C. DeF.) is that its stated size, 65535 x 65535, did not match its behavior -- which is good because I think that size could cover most of the grid. The issues caused by this one (the sky and the grayed-out mini-map) only showed if your av was within a 200x200-ish area near its horizontal center. If you left that area, the sky returned to normal and the mega-prim disappeared off the mini-map. Very very odd, but I guess that's what to expect from a hack of this nature.

.

It was late and i was feeling Silly.

About a week ago, the Sky in my sim looked VERY odd, the Sim boundries had taken on a texture that looked like one of the Map screens or something. Every test told me this wasn't a mega prim, it was just a Glitch that made the Sim Boundries (Including the roof) textured. It seemed Very odd, but luckily, it cleared upon relog.

Glitches, and bugs Happen.

Angel.
